I did our old 300tdi 90 and I cut down rear door (pretty rotten anyway) and attached a stainless steel top on it to tidy it up. I bought a black second hand Exmoor trim canvas and sticks at the Sudbury sort out and a freind helped me fit it in a day.
Hard top still sits in the back garden and the wife is always giving me grief about it ![]() Boy |

Found some photos. As you can see it is far from a shiny 90 but the wife loves it.

There are various levels - you can go sticks and hood, or sticks + roll hoop and hood, or cage and hood.
I have an NAS style cage on mine, plus an All Wheel Trim NAS style hood. I think the FS thread did say what parts were used? ![]() ![]() |

Land Rover produced a side opening door for the NAS(North American Spec) and SV Defenders - they are rare as hens teeth ! You can cut down a full door (which is what I did) as shown above but it is easier to just use standard rear door hinges on the side of a standard tailgate. The 'lock' can be as the vehicle for sale which is just the standard tailgate latch on one side or fabricate something using a Series door handle. Noooooo! I really shouldn't have read this thread. I have been chatting with Derrick at LRS about this conversion, but other jobs have constantly got in the way. Now I have the bug again.
![]() I recall that there was quite a good article in LRO a couple of years ago with step-by-steps (I can dig it out and scan if anyone is interested). When I get around to doing it, I plan to go roll-cage. Derrick can supply new side opening doors (not LR) at sensible money. regards Ian |

If I were to do another I wouldn't use the press studs across the rear door as they are a pain to do if you are in and out a lot (and make a lot of noise if you dont do up) I'd probably use velcro.

I would look to use bungee or similar if I were to do one again. The Tenax fasteners are OK but a a bit of a faff, and as my roof has shrunk slightly they keep popping off on the rear door - then they rattle against the stud.
IMO I don't think velcro would hold a flapping soft top at motorway speeds ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I wouldn't use velcro for the sides (I haven't had a problem with shrinkage so the Tenax fastenings are OK there) but I think it would be fine for just the bottom of the rear flap (as it is held with zips on both sides anyway)
Another 'nice' change would be to have the Tenax fastenings in black instead of silver |
