I'm no expert but based on what I've read, the Odessey is a good mix of performance for starting and supporting accessories.

If you're on a budget then Numax, if not then Odessey. Even if budget is no obstacle, the Numax are a good choice. Darren

What do you intend using the winch for? Winch challenge events or for self recovering whilst green laning (should not really need to) etc and what are the other bits and bobs? Assuming you are not into winch challenges and winch is for occassional use then you do NOT need twin batteries. Reason being if only occasional use of winch, time is not of the essence so you can winch for a minute and then sit there with engine revving if you are worried about battery state of charge, then do some more winching. So student budget, one battery, no split charging system means you can save money to be spent on a decent battery such as an Odyssey. Really need more information. Brendan |

Mostly it will be used for greenlaning recovery.
However during the course of next year I'm going to add a fridge to the back so think i'll need it. Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

please bear in mind that one of those cheap-y cool box things will eat batteries like there's no tomorrow.
I've used a relative good (of its kind) one and it used more juice than the fridge in my house! The compressor based "real" ones are much better (so I hear, no experience personally) but you pay for the privilege. I would forget the "cheap" option, it's more trouble than its worth. If you go with the "expensive" option then your choice of split charge and batteries will pale in to comparison with the cost of the fridge. E2A: if you're after more effective CCA for running a winch under load for longer, then just parallel two (preferably identical) batteries. No need for a split charger. |

A winch for recovery whilst green laning? Should you really be driving that green lane in those conditions?
A good 4x4 fridge will cost around £600+ and draw less then 1 amp. A cheap cool box will cost £100 or less and draw 3-4 amps.hr easily. Student budget? You should not need a winch for green laning. A fridge for use in the UK? Not essential. A strong cardboard box, a big plastic bag, some 2" insulation foam and ice blocks. A student, might even have access to liquid nitrogen, pour that over some ice blocks and that will used correctly keep your beer cold over a weekend. I would suggest you carefully thing about what you actually need and look for alternatives. Now IF you really want Odyssey batteries, IBS split management system, ARB fridge etc etc yes they can be supplied  but I would strongly advise you look at your budget and what you hope to achieve.

I have Numax in the Challenge truck (3 winches) and Odyssey in the 130 (1 winch / fridge freezer / big sound system) - both types have kept a charge and worked exactly as required.

I'd of said twin Numax CVX (86Ah and 1000MCA, about 760CCA), but as Tanya dont them now, I'd go with the Enduroline version ... same battery essentially, but 90Ah.
Twin post set-up is handy to! Tight squeeze on top (in the 300TDi, not done the TD5 yet), so some good terminal shields/boots are a good bit of safety! http://www.tayna.co.uk/Enduroline-CXV-X-1000-Amp-P9008.html Both can take a real good pounding to if you hit them hard without any trouble! And can pull themselves out of deep deep discharge with a good charger without any ill effects! I'd personally prefer them over the 2 more common makes even if I had an unlimited budget. But I do like my performance per ££. Unless you're in a situation where you need GEL/AGM, I don't see the need! There's nothing wrong with the others and they haven't built up their reputation for nothing ... I just like the way the Numax/Enduroline is a ruddy good battery for not to much of a wallet dent! And I know some people like to stick with a "Top Quality" brand name, which there's no shame in! I wouldn't say no should someone offer me a free set of Optima/Odyssey mind! Should fit the Optima/Odyssey battery cages to! They do in the Gwyn Lewis one anyway! Almost certain they will in the D44 one to! |

get the ones which fit! i bought 2 numax and couldnt get them to fit under the seat!
bought 2 optimas after and its in, but snug. height is the issue. |

Just curious, is that on a TD5 or newer?
I'm sure I've read somewhere the 330TDi and older have bigger boxes. Like I say, the Numax fit the 300TDi battery box fine. I have 2 in there now. But not tested the TD5 yet! |

Ahh you said Optima, for some reason I thought you said Numax!
I think the Optimas are RTS 4.2 and YTS 4.2 IIRC! |

Ahh! Hmmm ...
Which were the Numax? Like I say, I have 2 CVX-X's sat on a Gwyn Lewis Double Battery Tray in a 300TDi, so those ones fit. Just curious as to which these others were? |
