The nay sayers who say that Scotland cannot survive without the rest of the Union need to look at the figures. Compare Scotland with a European country with a similar population like Denmark for example

Population
Scotland 5.3 million Denmark 5.7 million
Area
Scotland 78300 km2 Denmark 42915 km2
GDP
Scotland 235 billion$ Denmark 211 billion$
GDP per capita
Scotland 44K$ Denmark 38K$

Now no-one would accuse the Danes of being a poor, backwards, race living on handouts with a poor standard of living. If Wikipedia is to be believed then your average Scot is better off than his danish counterpart and has a larger, more attractive country to boot.

I see what you are saying Pikey, But 3/4 of Scotland is uninhabitable. So what are they going to do concentrate all the business around Edinburgh and Glasgow?
They don't have enough industry to sustain them. They have no currency to use. The US has said all Scottish companys who have defence contracts will lose them. At the moment they are part of the UK so come under our business agreement. Scotland wouldn't have that agreement.
I don't see how they can survive.
Quoting wikipedia won't put money on the table and feed the nation.
What is their GDP based on? Oil and gas?? Surely they'll lose some of that if they get independence. Plus then they'll get a big slap of the UK debt to take away with them as a going away present.

I put it to you that the other islands, such as the Hebrides, and the Shetlands, particular the Shetlands are also increasingly thinking of becoming independent. Hell, according to polls, a lot of Shetland residents rather be part of a Scandinavian country. Where is a large amount of the oil? The Shetlands.

Then what? Scotland without oil, and without the UK.

The problem is not if Scotland is incapable of looking after itself. It could, but given most of Scotland are at least substantially more left-wing than England, in other words, socialist, the problem will arise that the big government agenda that all the Scottish voters prefer, will drive the government to excess borrowing in order to sustain such big government, bring about, a substantial, additional government deficit, with little prospect for increased tax return. If Scotland was run independently, by a government that traditionally kept out of people's lives as much as possible, for example the Tories, it would probably survive well. But it won't. Scotland will merely be riddled with debt, and deficit. By the way, it will have to pay it's fair share of our current deficit, which was brought about by Labour - one of the parties of choice in Scotland. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

If they do leave the union, will they rebuild hadrians wall? That will be an interesting construction project.

Personally I don't really care what they do, it won't make any difference to me, as soon as the time is right we'll be leaving this overcrowded island Whistle

I think there would be a fair few peed off English people if the Scottish rebuilt a wall that has England at both sides of it. I'm pretty sure the people of Northumbria and Cumbria are not being asked to vote on becoming part of Scotland! Rolling Eyes Wink Wink

The Scottish did enough damage to people of both those counties when they came south to raid homesteads and steal cattle and sheep. Shocked

I think before anything else we need some better geography and history lessons on BOTH sides of the borders and then perhaps we might understand each other better ! Wink

oh and yes, I agree with Lambert - home rule for Yorkshire! Thumbs Up Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

Adding my two pence worth I would like to see Scotland stay with the union but if the vote goes for a split then good luck to them.
I've worked in Scotland and have many friends up there, In places there is still quite a lot of resentment for the English.

Definitely stay in - it all seems a bit Braveheart daydreams to me and I can't see the long term benefit.

But then I left 20 years ago and have been excommunicated as a traitor anyway... Fully Restored 89 110 CSW V8

I think they should go it alone. They have contributed an enormous amount to Britain (check history) but their whingeing during the past few decades has got boring and annoying. I'm shocked that those who want to stay don't seem to be voicing it. Someone once said, be careful what you wish for as you just may get it. That is perfect for Salmond. They will REALLY struggle, but I would rather be without them now. I don't think Wales would go for it though. If Scotland struggled, Wales would be broke in a month. As lovely as the country is, it couldn't sustain itself. Now left.

I understand bpman completely. We feel the same, but we still have family that need us. When we no longer have those relying on us we'll probably be too old to go! Britain will never, ever be the same again. I honestly despair - a once-great nation, ruined by successive governments and unions, now incredibly overcrowded, with its infrastructure and facilities bursting to breaking point. Yet still you hear the Left talk about letting more and more people in! Cameron said a couple of years ago that they would curb immigration. He was, and is, a LIAR. He knew full well (as Newsnight pointed out that evening) that being in the EU meant that Britain couldn't do a single thing about immigration. He lied, and he knew he was lying. The only chance we have of reducing our population is by exiting the crazy EU. Remember everyone, Idiot Miliband and his lot have said that we wouldn't even EVER get a vote on that from Labour, let alone it being policy. Says it all. Now left.
