United Kingdom 2001 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Alveston Red
Red fluid
Hi All.

I am new to defenders, I have a 2001 TD5 and its dripping (not a lot) red fluid on the front differential on the drivers side, what is the most likely cause of this? I am assuming transmission fluid but not sure.

Also what would cause the vehicle not to start after a stall at traffic lights. It too a about 10 goes to get it going again and when I'm at 60-70 feels like the accelerator is losing then gaining power?

I have it booked into the garage for Monday but would just like to know if these are a common faults?

Thanks

Tim

The leak is most probably ATF and will be coming from either the power steering box or one of the two pipes which run to it. They are clipped to the front chassis cross member. 2002 110 td5

Is the above a split pipe? if so what does it feed I think that might be where the fluid is coming from

Seems to be at the rear of the engine on drivers (RHD) side.
Brake fluid, Clutch fluid, coolant......one of these is red as shown in the photos in the expansion tank or is it a reflection of something else?

I have a leak from the same area but as my Defender is LHD it can not be clutch or brake fluid. So I will check the coolant expansion tank soonest. Can you let us know what the workshop finds when they check it? On mine the fluid runs down on the cover under the engine and mixes with other fluids and grease and muck so it is difficult to identify type of fluid.

Tim,
Just had a similar problem with mine stalling & taking a few goes to start. When I did get it started it seemed to chug into life then it was as if nothing had happened. It happened 3 times in 1day. Got it checked out with a diagnostic check first but nothing showed up. He then checked fuel pump & that was fine. Checked injectors & they seemed ok but with the guys experience he said it could be the seals going. Got him to change the seals & touch wood all seems good now.
Apparently then can let air in which makes it hard to start & run a little rough.

This is only my 2p worth.

Hope you get it sorted. Thumbs Up

thanks Martin, I'm 90% sure its the coolant that's leaking but I will ask them to check the seals as not sure why it wouldn't start then started up.

Thanks again, I will let you all know what the outcome is Smile 2001 90 TD5 CSW Alveston Red Manual

Checked mine for leak today and it is not coolant. And not clutch or brake fluid as mine is LHD. I belive that it is engine oil coming from somewhere rear of the engine. Will have Another look tomorrow.
