From a welders forum......

Parallel paths too....there are certain electronics that require permanent live feeds. For the amount of time it takes disconnecting the battery is the prudent thing to do to possibly prevent further woes and expenditure putting it right afterwards surely? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

All our tractors have big signs on that say words to the effect of "disconnect battery before welding and put the earth clamp as close as possible".

Given they have rather more complicated electronics than a Defender I'd think that would seem a reasonably sensible guide to follow.

i plan to tack weld the bolts to the tray of the front bumper to stop my winch going walkies like it did a few months ago whilst parked on my driveway Evil or Very Mad

so... if i clean off a patch of the black powder coated bumper Sad to put the earth on (as close as possible to the four bolts).
then disconnect the battery.

i should be ok?
