Up here in Cheshire, there's been a big push in boosting the Special Constabulary recently. They have the same posters as the 'normal' police, and looking at them side by side, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. In my experience, they receive just as much respect and face no more persecution from the public than the normal police. They're also very well trained up here, and certainly given lots of support. As far as I'm aware, they have to commit to at least 4 hours a week (although that may vary from force to force). In my opinion, it's a good thing to do and would suit nicely with his career choice. Good luck to him! Thumbs Up An engine to TDi for!

@Tom - he's not studying at Essex although he will be using the facilities. I did my degree there so I have a soft spot for it Smile
Plus his godfather is a professor there. Plus my father was a lecturer there...
Hmm...beginning to see a reason for his thinking Confused

@Gum - cheers, that's very reassuring. I'm actually beginning to think it's a good idea - plus agreeing with him would be the more pleasant course Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Sandhurst? There was a time (and I really do mean not very long ago) when I would have fought for this country, but not now. What would you be fighting for, have you looked around? Sorry, I don't want this thread going a particular way, but this country isn't what it was when I was young enough to die willingly for it. Now I'm just trying to get to the end of my life reasonably unscathed. Successive Labour and Tory governments have given us what we have now. A bloke in my town has just been given 10 years for killing two cyclists - drunk, banned, and with 67 previous convictions. While a drug pusher got 12 years. Anyone care to explain why I should be proud of a country that does that? I could go on, and my apologies to ZeDefender, but I wouldn't advise any young man to look at the forces. Look how we treat them! Now left.

I think that some forum members are getting a bit confused with the terms:-

PCSO...................Police Community Support Officer...........little powers, paid work.... set up by the Labour government.

Special Constable.................Voluntary, almost the same training and powers as a paid Police Officer.

Specials used to be disregarded by regular Police Officers and used for menial tasks but that all changed as I was about to leave the service, I used to have one a crew member. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

All new entrants in my Force (Thames Valley Police) have to complete a foundation degree in Policing - as part of this, they have to join the Special Constabulary and complete a lot of shifts if they wish to qualify.

They may have been regarded in bad light in the past, but these days things are quite different.

If he is every close to Berkshire and has a few hours spare, I can easily organise a day out with one of my team to see what it's really like... My blog - www.anacreinhampshire.blogspot.co.uk

Because of the financial cuts, Police Forces (sorry, Police Services Confused ) are having to rely upon Special Constables like never before. To become a copper now you really need to join either the Specials or become a PCSO first. PCSO's start on a better wage than new coppers, but coppers wages overtake them over time.

Instead of cops going out in pairs at night, they often get partnered with a Special instead. Not an ideal situation for the cop, but great for the Special.

Be interested to see where you find that.

Given a PC starts at roughly £22k rising to £25k after probation. Pcso starting is roughly £18k. All published figures available to see force wide.

Back on topic, very kind gesture of the serving officer to arrange a day out for him Thumbs Up
