1 and 3 are good deterants,1 you can see and the other you can't, most thieves these days will park it up and wait to see if the Police can find by the Tracker. 2.4 90 XS

I agree, 1 and 3.
Something to be aware of with the tracker, it will drain your battery down after a while if the vehicle is not driven, not to sure how long that will be on a defender, but my other half has a Porsche and it takes her battery out if not driven for 14 days - and that is with a brand new battery. Also, check what options are available with the Tracker. We went for the option that you phone up to report the vehicle stolen, the cheapest, but some of the other options start to get very expensive. You might want to check out the LR vesion of tracker, I think it can work out cheaper than some of the third party options. Bob |

Once stolen and possibly abused I would possibly think twice about doing all I can to retrieve it not knowing how badly the engine etc may have been thrashed! In my opinion better to spend the money on 'decent' insurance and sleep well in your bed knowing if you've declared the extras all will be replaced if some tealeaf decides to have it away!

To stop it getting nicked in the first place this would be my choice http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/Meck_Lock.shtml

Have you got it fitted to yours then? Simple conception using a bypass/shut off valve but expensive for what you're getting in my opinion. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Nope, just seems to be a good concept in my eyes if a little pricy. |

Knot Yet - welcome.
It depends what you're protecting. See http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1620.html?highlight=mechlock for other thoughts. If you're protecting the contents then you need to be thinking about window tints, window guards, extra locks (like they have on vans...). If you're preventing it getting nicked then a decent pedal lock will be pretty effective or a fuel/electrical isolator will slow them down. I spoke to Mudstuff about the mechlock. They said it would be a real pain (read very expensive) to fit to the Puma because of the way they need to route the plumbing. Basically they were warding me off the idea. It certainly isn't a DIY or friendly mechanic fit for the TDci One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Thanks all - really useful advice
![]() Have ordered a Clutch Claw - gone off the idea of a Tracker and thinking of getting a 4tress from Halfords - its cheap but another visual sign the vehicle's security has been considered Now looking at trying to make the alarm slightly less tamper proof ![]() TQ all J Defender 110 Puma Utility XS |

The only thing with the clutch claw... is that you can still drive the car. Use the handbrake to slow down and drive clutch-less (not hard). Still a visual deterant though. If it was mine... I'd move the horn (or battery back up siren if fitted), or fit a second back up horn in a different place (i.e. somewhere it can't be reached by slashing wheel arch spat).... as well as a couple of other tricks. Welcome to the forum.
The first security mod on mine will be a tracker. Unfortunatly nowerdays if someone wants to steal your car they will. If they can't drive it off they will tow it away. At least wth a decent tracker you will know it is moving withing 5 mins and the cops will have retrived it withing 10-15 mins. I was looking at one that even askes you if you are in it and if you aren't would you like to dissable it? If you say yes, the next time it goes lower than 5mph it will cut the engine ![]() Glyn ![]() |
