Matching temp sender and temp gauge
Hi guys

As you know i have recently accuired a 90 2.5td fitted with a 200tdi engine by p.o. the temp gauge always tends to stay around the hot area sometimes just before the red and sometimes just inside the red, i know a temp gauge and temp sender should be matched but i have no idea if the engine has a 2.5td sender fitted or a 200tdi sender fitted, is the temp gauge compatable to both sender units or do i need to buy a 200tdi sender and gauge Smile Graham

try Steve Parker website under 200Tdi into 90/110 conversion,

I swapped mine over to a VDO gauge - actually gives you a reliable temp, rather than land rovers hottish and coldish gauge.

You can see when the 'stat opens it's that accurate.

If I remember rightly the temperature between Normal and Hot is only 2C.

There are two different sender units for that engine, one has a green seal and the other a blue. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

So will a 200tdi temp sender match the original temp gauge or the 2.5td and 200tdi temp gauges the same Smile Graham

It hurts when you get old and cannot remember things like yesterday

My 2.5 was built with a 200 temp gauge as were others, I purchased a sender unit for a 2.5, the parts man at my local Indi did not know about the two sender units and gave me a later unit when it should have been and earlier one. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Right I see I have already ordered a 200tdi sender from paddocks amongst a few other bits but think I will buy a 200tdi temp gauge aswell rather than keep messing about swapping stuff about as I am not really sure what setup I have as the tdi engine was fitted a few years ago by the last owner and I am not entirely sure what gauge I have as originally the 90 was a 2.5td so think this is the way to go Wink Graham

I have since found out that 2.5.TD and 200TDIs used the same gauge so I will fit the defender 200tdi sender and see how it goes Smile Graham

Right I removed my temp sender today to replace it with a new one but when I removed it the sender didn't have a seal on it and the new one didn't either but both look the same, my new one is a defender 200tdi one from paddocks in a blue box Embarassed

does the sender need a seal as I am thinking could the sender be earthing on the cylinder head where it screws into the head Smile Graham

Cheers for that its just that on series trucks they used to have a fiber washer between the sender and head as its the middle bit that measures the heat and doesn't touch anything to earth out on so I was thinking if there was no washer on a tdi sender it mite earth out when screwed up to the head Confused Graham
