300 tdi possible buy. Please help!
Greetings mates

I have come across the possibility of buying a 1997 300 tdi. It has 150k km in it. The seller claims it has a new turbo and some other new parts and its only owner was the world health org. I will have a look at it tomorrow I will check out the following:
-leaks
-difflock
-clean coolant
-clean chassis with little or no corrosion
-correct turbo functioning
-correcto clutch functioning

If I missed anything please point it out. Also please let me know if there is anything that I should replace concerning the age and km in it. Parts that should be changed due to known wear or unreliable. If I do buy it I have planned to get this work done:

-New oils and fluids
-Injector cleaning
-new timing belt
-fixing of oil leaks (if needed)
-General body and suspension adjustment
-cleaning and service of alternator and starter
-new water pump
-engine flush
-cooling system flush
-steering adjustment
-wheelbearing adjustment
-new disks and breakpads
-new caliper seals

Also, if I missed anything I would very much appreciate it if someone could point it out. I have owned a td5 before for 165k km and currently a Puma with 190k km. This other purchase is because I need another vehicle as for my current Puma is for personal use, this will be for work so I will get all this work done to expect high reliability. The price is 18K USD. It is relatively fair cosidering I am overseas, where Defenders are rare. I bought my Puma new but I cant afford another new one, hence I will be buying this second hand. Any help is very much appreciated. I will not consider toyota land cruiser for 3 reasons:
-I love Land Rover and the Defender is the best vehicle ever created by mankind
-land cruisers are very common so grand theft auto is usual
-Defenders here are rare, so grand theft auto has never really happened, apparently thieves dont have a market for stolen Defenders

thanks again mates!

Cheers
Mack

England
300tdi
i dont know what sort of climate you live in but the rear crossmembers rot out on defenders here in england so have a good look at it and factor in the cost of fitting a new one if it is rotten,if you jack it up at the back using the original jack and round holes in the crossmember sometimes the metal will just give way under the weight(mine did )

also the cambelts had a habit of shredding and an updated pulley needs to be fitted but it is possible that with the sort of mileage on that one that it has already been fixed but check it with the seller,

i hope this helps and adios Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Consider replacing the "P" gasket on the cooling system,Failure of this will cause rapid coolant loss and overheating.

There is an improved version of this available from most Land Rover parts specialists. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I had a 300tdi a few years back and the cambelt and pulley were a recall replacement.
The old one looked similar to the rubbish found in a vacuum cleaner. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Checked the rig a few days ago it was a complete disaster. Had some paint job done and it looked nice, BUT there were leaks everywhere, weird transfer case noises when shifting, it felt gutless (I know its not my puma but I have driven 300 tdi before and it was a shame) the odomoter didnt work and the man alleged he changed the oil every 6 months. So this was a big no. Since Defenders here are rare, I guess Im going with some cheaper jap truck. Probably a dmax 2008-ish. Im not familiar with P gasket term what is it?
Cheers
