painting woodwork

Any decent painting knowledge on here?

I have hardwood windows and shutters, about 20 years old, no rot at all.

I suspect they're a 'b4st4rd' mahogany from one of the French colonies.

They've always been stained but now we want them to be painted, paint across here seems to be poor and very difficult to comprehend which goes with what etc.

We're back to the UK in a couple of weeks, anyone know what paint system will give us best longevity of both paint and wood, not a fan of the aluminium primer as it doesn't allow the wood to breath?

Hi,
Bedec Multi Surface Paint was recommended to me years ago by a decorator.
I've not used it on hardwood, but was told it had been used on heritage ship restorations.
I had 2 plastic/composite exterior doors painted with a colour 5 years ago. Both still look fine.
White, used on interior woodwork, does not 'yellow' with age, like some modern paints do.
No primer or undercoat needed.

The finish is a matt or satin type, not a shiny gloss if that matters to you.
Applying it can be less forgiving than DIY paints. Over brushing should be avoided it ruins the finish, apply in one continuous coat. Joining areas painted in patches can be difficult for that reason, make the joins in an unobtrusive place.

Thanks DSC thats looks interesting - they have a stockist near where we're staying as well.

I'll do some more googling later on.

I can’t recall the exact set up i used but it was essentially yatch undercoat with normal farrow and ball eggshell on top when i did they ash frames on the farm house windows which are a pain as they are hard wood and get exposed to a lot of temp and less than ideal interior temp. It took me a room to perfect my methods but the second room i did has been flake and peel free for 10 years, the less than ideal room which i did 1st has only just started to go 16 years later.
