hi all...

off to the artic circle next xmas... by law will need studs fitted while there. Really want to fit tyres here in the UK and studs on the way. I have a black 110 XS CSW so thought about some/cool/black rims.

So whats the options - pics please.

Wouldn't laugh too hard about retractable studs. They will exist before you know it.

Another question, in which country is it law to have studs fitted? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Here are my winter wheels/tires. Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT on Land River HD Wolf wheels. Have had them for 5 years now, and this LT is now superseded by the LT2. Mine not studded though, which would be illegal here anyway. Great winter tires, probably the best for a Defender as Land Rover Switzerland are offering those here as an official LR accessory. A friend of mine here has the same wheels with the LT2 on his new Defender and went in deep snow up the mountains last weekend. Very steep sometimes, and he had no problems, did not need chains. Thumbs Up
Eric

In Finland it is not law to have tyres with studs, just winter tyres. In fact, just M+S tyres. I worked out there for 10+ years. Even my BMW ran very well on Nokian winter tyres. That is, friction tyres. Studs are useful on ice but the friction tyres are still very good. I suspect Norway has similar laws. If I was heading up to the North Cape again I'd go with winter tyres (mountain/ snowflake) and a good set of chains. Last time I was up that way in winter it was -37 degrees so please consider the break down situation carefully. On one stretch between Finnish Lapland and Norway we past 1 truck (one) in 6 hours. Not another vehicle. If you break down and are not prepared you won't last long.

Ericvv... nice set up. Have you found the performance has decreased recently? The older winter tyres tended to get worse as the rubber got harder with age. 5 years used to be the point we would replace them. Maybe the newer materials are better. Nokians are the best winter tyres I have used. We tested different tyres and they were the most dependable and hard wearing.

Exactly what we intend doing... Yes I'm more worried about breaking down with 4 kids in the car under 13... Modern tech clothing and sleep gear we should be fine! Yep everything I've read has said winter tyres are enough! Thanks for the input... We're going Denmark, Sweden, Finland Norway and back...
