Oil contamination in Air Flow Meter
Hi all.

('06 TD5)

Needed to replace the MAF Meter due to sluggish performance, testing with a volt meter on pin 2 gave a reading of 1.70 volts, so purchased a replacement from BAS (site sponsor )next day delivery !!!. When removing old MAF found it to be moist with oil , oil spot covering approx third of the mirror ??, the inside of the ribbed tube section towards the turbo intake, had oil lying in the bottom of the 2 ribs and the junction to the plain section. The plain tube when wiped inside was really dry untill where the breather entered, just moist here, . No oil leaking from turbo housing. So all cleaned and replaced, new MAF reading 2.40 volts on digi meter.

So wheres the oil come from ( black engine oil) and run against the airflow also slighly up slope. Any thoughts any one !!

The new MAF solved the running problem, thanks to all the the advice gleaned from the site.

Oily vapour from the breather in the cam cover via turbo and intercooler.

You can fit a catch can or filter in the pipe from the cam cover to the air inlet pipe to trap most of this.

Think what the inside of the intercooler will be like!

Can the oil vapour flow against the air flow through the air filter, the oil vapour comes in after the MAF and the pipe section ???. two way flow within the single intake tube ???.

I can accept the oil is from the vapour , how can it travel against in the air flow which is created by the turbo

Sorry, I was thinking of the MAP sensor not MAF.

Dunno then!
