DRL causing radio interferance
I have just fitted some inexpensive chinese DRL and this is causing a trerrible radio interferance. Is there a simple way to solve this?

The radio is LR original. I take the signal to DRL from the cigar lighter. The DRL relay box is fitted next to the radiator so it is far away from the radio/antenna.

Regards/Hans

I had the same issue with a cheapo LED reversing light... Terrible hash all over the FM band..
Binned it, and went back to a standard bulb..

You could try a 0.1uf capacitor across the terminals, and / or some ferrite beads on the supply lines... ... ,-------,

Thanks for those suggestions. I have already purchased a couple of ferrite beads but have not tried to fit them yet due to cold weather. Should they be fitted as close as possible to the lamps?

Fit any interference suppression bits as close as possible to the offending items.. ... ,-------,

Today I fitted the ferrite beads close to the LED lamps. A slight reduction of the interferance could be noticed.

Then I made a loop of the connection wires so that they went through the ferrite beads twice. This made a further reduction of the noise but still not acceptable when the radio reception was poor.

Conclusion is to buy better quality DRL or go back to use the normal headlights... Crying or Very sad

Interesting reading Paul. But I must admit that I did not understand anything...

The type of suppression core that I use is shown on page 2, figure 3 - (2) Split Round Cable Suppression Core. And I have both the (+) and (-) wires going through the core. This gave a very small improvement. I then took the wires twice through the core and this gave a further improvement.

But there is still a lot of interferance so i would suggest that the suppession cores are not a good solution unless there is another way of connecting them. But again, I could not digest the information in that technical report Embarassed

I agree that the tech sheets are hard going.. Type 31 material cores have the greatest range of attenuation.. But you can always mix n match..

My recently fitted double USB outlet is chucking out a ton of interference, I thought it was my stereo going deaf, but my Ham handheld is suffering too when used in the 90, so it looks like I'll be playing ebay to get the cores and capacitors for the cure. ... ,-------,

Take your feeds from the battery, both +ve and -ve, makes a huge difference.

I just had a dig around in my parts box, and found a bag of T130 type 26 toroids, so I made a simple common mode choke..

7 turns of heavy gauge wire on both sides, wound in opposite sense to each other.. See picture, says it better than I can type.
I'll try to fit it this weekend, assuming the rain stops, and see what improvement it makes
