Do I need diff lock to jack a wheel?
My diff lock often doesn't engage when the gearbox is cold, but completely fine when warmed up.

There's the warning label on the seatbox and in the manual that you should engage it before lifting, but if I properly chock the wheels on the other axle would there be a problem if it was not engaged? On hard level ground surely things would not move much.

If I come out to a flat tire one morning I can't really drive it around to warm up before changing the wheel...

You should be fine without difflock if you chock the wheels and are on level ground as you suggest. Jacking up one front wheel should be fine as the handbrake will still hold as both rear wheels are on the ground. Jacking up a back wheel requires more care as without difflock the handbrake will no longer hold the vehicle and it could move and slip off the jack. Landrover issue that warning to cover themselves as they have no control over the situation when you may have to jack up a vehicle. As with all things however the final decision must be yours. A portable air compressor could blow up a flat tyre enough for you to get to a tyre place who can take the wheel of for repair which gives you another option. And remember putting the transfer box in neutral and running the engine with the car in a highish gear will warm up the gearbox oil without actually driving the car. A couple of minutes running like this might be enough to get the difflock to engage but remember to put the transfer box back into gear before you jack!.As with most things use common sense and you should be fine! Really? As far as I'm aware the handbrake acts on all 4 wheel simultaneously, so will still hold the fronts when the back is in the air? An engine to TDi for!

Same principal if you have 1 wheel on 1 axle spinning in the mud, you stop, lock the center diff and you transfer 50% of the torque to each axle so you can get drive again to the axle with grip.

hand brake only locks the back wheels as its only on the rear side of the center diff.
