2.4 Puma won't start
Hi I’m looking for some advice.

I’ve got a 2.4 tdci Puma 2009 basic key model without immobiliser / alarm, no air-con/electric windows etc.

I was out driving, parked up for 5-10 minutes, turned the key to go and it wouldn’t start. Tried jump start, bump start. It has a new battery.

When I turn the ignition key it tries to turn the engine over very slightly then the main relay clicks off, I then have to wait about 10 seconds before retrying and get exactly the same result.

I attached a Nanocom and it shows code P1602-31 immobilzer engine control module no signal.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

Could well be you need to do the instrument cluster bypass mod.

Tried it this morning, but still nothing.... thanks anyway.

Has anyone any other suggestions I could try?

Check the relays are sitting tight, remove them, they should feel tight, then reinsert , the next to check is the connections to the ignition switch , they can come loose or be making bad contact, then the ignition switch itself which is a known issue

Thanks Ian,

I've tried the relays and connections, earths etc. and took the AS10 box out (with difficulty) but nothing to see in there, so I've just ordered a new ignition switch as the current one does look a bit sloppy tbh. I'll update my post as and when with any progress; fortunately I've got an older 110 to get around in that does start Very Happy

I am having the exact issue. To the letter! Tried everything. Same code as you. It will crank, turn few times and dies. then it wont do anything, only if I clear the code. Please heeeeelp. 😩

Update; just changed the ignition switch and still no joy Sad

It turns over once or so, stops and won't turn over again for 10 seconds or so.

I’ve got a 2.4 tdci Puma 2009 basic key model without immobiliser / alarm, you still have AS10 immobiliser / alarm unit in place but in ( bypass Mode sending signal to the engine ECU so you can start the engine) with out key fob

So pay you check fuse and 12v dc supply's to the AS10 immobiliser / alarm

pin 10 ignition input feed from fuse 8 --10 amp

Pin 12 Ground input

Pin 25 Battery voltage input fuse 7 -- 20 amp

Is this DTC P1602-31 immobilizer engine still present Question

also make shore wire that carry immobilizer signal to and from AS10 is not open circuit or short to ground

Pin 14 AS10 ------- to ------- pin 3 inst cluster in-----------pin 4 inst cluster out---------------------

ECM---- end----- plug---- C0872---G4 ( light green / slat gray tracer )

I have checked the fuses, but I'll go through your list of suggestions tomorrow. Appreciating the input.

Hi Dorsetsmith

I’ve had a quick look, but it’s been raining proper.

All the fuses relays and wires seem good with power.

There isn’t any power on the grey plug that I can see. The smaller green plug does appear to have power.

The most recent codes are now :

Code P1602 - immobilizer / engine control module communication error intermittent
Code U3000 - control module (not tested permanent)
Code U0401 - invalid data received from engine control module /powertrain control module (not tested DTC)

Once it’s dried off I’ll have another go. I’m usually ok with spanners, but electrics really isn’t my thing tbh Confused

pin 10 ignition input feed from fuse 8 --10 amp this is only powered then ignition switch in pos 2

Pin 12 Ground input

Pin 25 Battery voltage input fuse 7 -- 20 amp this powered all the time from the starting battery

Test between pin 12 Ground input and pin25 12v must be present all the time

Test between pin 12 Ground input and pin 10 ignition input feed from fuse 8 --10 amp this is only powered then ignition switch in pos 2 12v must be present only with ignition switch in pos 2

UPDATE

Hi Dorsetsmith

Well, the good news is it has started, but I’m unaware of what I’ve done to do it which is worrying.

I went back to basics and rechecked the earths (which I’d done several time before) and also ran an additional earth from the bulkhead earth direct to the battery, put the AS10 and instrument connectors back in and the dam thing started. I removed the additional earth and didn’t expect it to start, but it did, so stopped and restarted it several times. I plugged the Nanocom in and it’s clear of faults.

I’m still not convinced I’ve found it, so it’ll only be local journeys for now where I could tow it back with the other one. Tbh I’ve had this Defender for quite a few years and never had any electrical gremlins before.

Anyway, just like to thank you and Ianh for your help; much appreciated Thumbs Up

And hope thegreatwhitedefender gets his truck fixed soon, if it’s not already done.

instrument connectors have been none have a problem with dry soldered joints i.e. the pin instrument connectors and PCB of the instrument dash

earthing is norther one i.e. starting at the battery down the chassis and on to the transfer box and next across to the driver side flat brad from chassis to the body work under the driver foot well

one main earthing headers is behind coolant expansion tank

chassis wiring loom earthing point is off side transfer box 6mm bolt

2.4 Puma have a problem with engine wiring looms that rub against engine metal work and this can give problems
