Disk Handbrake
Hi All,

I recently converted my TD5 to a disk handbrake as the drum had packed in and i had decided a disk would be better for frequent off road use, I seem to have a couple of problems though.

The handbrake lever was coming all the way right to then end of its throw and didn't feel to be grabbing that tight, So i went under the truck and adjusted the barrel adjuster a little to hopefully resolve but it still doesn't seem to grab that tight and the lever still pulls to the end of its throw ???

The second issue is that when released there is a rubbing and the pads don't seem to release from the disk entirely, I got back from a drive earlier and immediately jumped under the truck and felt that the disk was warm so while it isn't touching hard it is clearly rubbing ?

Any ideas or similar experiences ? Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40.
If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it.

To be 100% honest I am not sure as I had my garage source and fit it but from the brief time I spent adjusting it it looks very similar to what I just looked up now so I suspect so but can check when there is some light as the truck is now locked away in the garage. Defender 90 TD5 County -

If it's the X Eng the X will be profiled out of the protecting guard which protects the disk.

you can adjust the throw of the arm on the caliper too, plus there are different mounting holes for the cable to attach to this arm, each adjusting the amount of pull required.

when new or with new pads they do seem to take a while to settle/bed in.

you say it uses the whole range of the lever, but does it hold? Cheers

I had both of those problems and resetting the lever cured both of them. If you download the x-eng disk brake instructions they have an explanation on how to do it.

I think basically your pads are sitting too far off the disk and your having to compensate with the cable - when really you need it to be on the arm, that way the pads can sit off the disk at rest (with no tension on the cable) - but will pull on firmer when you pull the lever.

I'm happy to provide more info if needed.

OK thanks for the tips have downloaded the x-eng manual and will get under the truck on the weekend to see what is going on it must be just needing a bit of tweaking to get adjusted correctly. Defender 90 TD5 County -
