Glowing battery light
The battery light on my 200tdi is occasionaly glowing dimly. I would normally expect this to signify a problem with the alternator and it would glow brighter as more load is applied. However in this case there is usually a glow at idle with no load, switiching on side lights dims the glow and dipped headlight dims it to the point that it is hardly noticeable.

Could this still be an alt problem?

All 101s suffered from that.
If it's not causing any charging problems forget it.

Only real way to tell is stick a voltmeter on your battery and compare readings static/engine running. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I would suspect that it is dieing or at least the voltage regulator is on its way out. Also clean the contacts for the wires on the back of the alt. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Sounds like youve got muck in the alternator. Clean all the connectors and air blast the alternator if you cant be bothered to remove it! worth checking your battery terminals too.

Doesn't take long to remove the alternator.

Once out there are 2 or 3 nuts to remove and the thing comes apart. Then it can be given a good clean, and you can also inspect the brushes - they may be worn completely, with nothing left.

A new brush and diode pack can be obtained rather cheaply. Much more likely that this is the problem, rather than spending a load of money on a new alternator.
