2004 Defender 110 Td5 CSW Java Black
Better Ride
My 110 (2004) is a bit, well, Defendery.... Wink

Seeing as it's a family car really what can I do to make it ride more like my D3 (I know it will never)

??

Will bushes, springs and dampers transform it or just make it a *bit* better??

What is your vehilce? CSW DCPU?

What setup do you currently have? standard, anti-roll bars, tyres, etc.

What do you want it to do? purely road or a mixture

What seats do you have? odd question perhaps, but they make a HUGE difference to comfort. Just think what are the real differences between a 300 tdi Discovery and a similar aged Defender... One feels like you are being wafted around in an arm chair and the other... well... doesn't... Rolling Eyes

Incidentally I have just returned to standard springs, Koni adjustable shocks and anti-roll bars and the 110 is riding better than it ever has done before. Lovely comfortable ride and much less tilt in the corners, of which there are many around these parts. Still standard seats and I have fitted Continental Cross Contact Ats as well which are IMHO the best all round tyre available (ducks hides in anticipation of the BFG AT cohorts onslaught...)

110 CSW (not sure if these had ARBs as standard?)

STD Gabbers 235/85/16

Newish Puma seats

Not so worried about rolling, or wanting lowered, just would like it not to clatter so much over bumps Smile

Maybe just needs a new set of bushes, standard springs and some nice shocks

No CSWs did not have it as standard, I did not either. Fitted them a month ago and by crikey it was worth every penny.

Your CSW will have come with progressional springs front and back as standard and as far as I am concerned they are just a brilliant compromise. I can highly recommend the Koni Heavy Track adjustable shocks. I have them set on the softest setting at the moment and they eliminate so much of the harsh bumps and knocks on our country roads. Combine the suppleness of the ride with the anti-roll bars and the old bus (2002 TD5) is positively a pleasure to drive. I am not sure where you are in the UK, but anywhere near north Shropshire and feel free to ask to try her out.

How are the Puma seats? Original cloth seats in mine at the moment.

Are you on the original set of bushes it came out of the factory on? How many miles have they covered?

It's I assume on original Shocks, bushes and springs at 69,000 miles.

Fronts are marginally better, more just newer foam than anything. 2nd Row are a massive improvement Very Happy

Yes I would assume that to be the case too. I found the standard rear shocks to be too harsh on my CSW. the Konis however are a completely different story.

Hear what you say about the 2nd row, TD5 age are just horrendous... Food for thought... Always fancied heated seats too... Whistle

How much did you spend on shocks and ARBs then?

Did you go for LR ARBs or after market jobs?

The whole lot; so 4x shocks, shock mounts, turret rings, turrets, ARBs and all the associated mounts and bushes set me back about 700 in total and about a day of tinkering. Most of the parts were OEM after market. I did not go for the various kits you can buy because they are all for 90s and you then have to buy extra mounts and bushes on top of the kit.

Reason for the turrets and mounts was that I removed my Gwyn Lewis extreme suspension kit and had previously used the turrets off of the TD5 on my project vehicle.

Was it worth it?? HELL YES...! Every penny...

And Martin you are right the Konis are lovely shocks, looking forward to taking them off piste...

The anti roll bars are well worth doing, the difference is like night and day, it has made a huge differnce on my 90 Mr. Green Standard Landrover items, although I could be tempted to try IRB's uprated one which I think is 25mm. From what I have read the 110 seems more needy of an uprated rear bar, because of the extra overhang, most optiing for the foundry 4x4 orange one or Garys Alive 28mm, which would be the one I opted for.

Any idea what sort of springs come standard on 110 hard top.

I know some lads talk about colour coding but I see nothing on mine.

ARB's on my list, just need to decide which to go for now.

Good morning DF1. 750 Euro is steep, Paddocks do them for 450 Euro.

If you are wanting to remain standard then you cannot beat the dual rated RKB101111 (270/420Lbs) on the rear, supple with light weight in the back and capable should you fill it up to the gunnels... These were the springs fitted to 110 and 130 hardtops and pickups. If you are looking for a little less then there is RKB500300 which was fitted to the 110 CSW vehicles and is a little softer.

I have the former on my CSW and love them, MartinK thought they were too harsh on his USW and fitted the latter. Think we both have the same shocks...

Same goes for the front springs, the standard dual rated items are superb for a standard front end. If you have a big ol winch out front then the HD single rated springs would be best.
