Not a chance of it being 2015. The proposed National FM Switchoff has been firmly kicked into touch by Vaizey...see his announcement Dec 16th. 2022 is looking more likely but if they don't make the move to DAB+ then it will mean that our digital listening will remain stuck using poor quality based on 25 year old technology. And that is before the broadcasters drop their bit-rates down to something unlistenable and/or also in mono. |

^^ by which time, we will probably all end up streaming radio/live broadcasts/podcasts etc from our phones via bluetooth (or it's reliable successor) to a headunit. This can already be done using a parrot head unit.

I'm not so sure. True, you might do that at home and with a very generous download allowance (although TBH that is less of an issue these days) from your ISP. You'd have to be prepared to accept the usual drop-outs that you often get with internet streaming which IMO puts me off using that as a radio stream.
But on the move in the Defender? I don't think that the mobile networks have the bandwidth to cope TBH. You simply cannot beat broadcasting (be it FM or DAB) for listening to the radio. |
