RACE 2 RECOVERY WILDCATS WITHDRAW FROM DAKAR

"Sad news for the Race 2 Recovery team as both Wildcats are forced to pull out in the early stages of the Dakar Rally.

Both Wildcats driven by Race 2 Recovery team have been forced to withdraw from the Dakar Rally.
Tony Harris and co-driver Quin Evans were making great progress until a large sand dune caused their Wildcats to roll end-over-end. Fortunately no one was harmed and the vehicle went on to complete the stage, but the service crew later discovered a crack in the roll cage, making it unsafe to continue the car.

The second Wildcat driven by Ben Gott and Philip 'Barney' Gillespie is suspected to have blown its head gasket around 300km into the day’s stage, causing irreperable damage, despite the efforts of R2R’s racing truck.

The R2R team's Renault Kerax T4 lorry is still in the game, which will now be the focus of all the team's efforts.

R2R Driver Tony Harris, speaking from the team’s bivouac in San Rafael, Argentina, said: 'We’re clearly very disappointed that we’ve had to retire two race vehicles. Our preparations had gone very well but this year’s experience just goes to show why they call the Dakar the toughest race in the world. As a team, we’ll now focus on the T4 truck and put all our efforts in trying to keep this vehicle in the Dakar. We want to stay in the race as long as possible and we’re proud that our efforts continue to raise the profile of military charities including Tedworth House, Help for Heroes Official and BLESMA:British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported our Dakar challenge so far.'

Race 2 Recovery aren't the only team entering Land Rovers in the Dakar this year. Rally Raid UK's two Desert Warriors are also battling across the South American continent. See here for their latest updates on Facebook."
