Handbrake
Hi Folks,
Whilst trying to come to terms with the fact that my clutch is about to need replacing, a couple of days ago I pulled up the handbrake and it went BANG....
Handbrake no longer works and the lever is in the upright position without the brake being engaged......
i presume this is the cable that has snapped?
i have just been to LR and they want 82 for a new cable...needless to say i didn't buy it.
Just phoned Paddock Spares and they are selling selling cables at 9.50...?
Now....am i missing something here? How can LR charge 82 for a part that i can buy for 9.50 somewhere else.....?
Or is there more to this than meets the eye? Is there another part that i need to buy from paddock that accounts for the massive price discrepancy?

Sounds like a snapped cable, be careful what brand is from Paddocks. Could even be in a blue box. (Britpart) Shocked
In most cases cheap is not better far from it but does depend on brand. Occasionally LR use a brand and re package it yet it is the identical item.

You will find a price difference with most aftermarket parts for most makes of vehicle although not always as big as this one! Most forum members will say that you should always use genuine or OEM parts and avoid the blue box Britparts like the plague! I always use genuine parts wherever possible but would not when there is such a big difference in price. You should find that Paddocks cable will do the job just fine with no additional parts needed! Thanks - I'm hearing what you are all saying about aftermarket parts, and i do generally agree to this principle.
but i feel that in this case i can afford to buy 6 or 7 cables from Paddock for the cost of 1 LR cable and still have change in my pocket...?!

on another note.... Are handbrake cables straight-forward to fit? Never fitted one before...

A good point but depends on how often you'd like to do it....

Funnily enough, on Sunday i had to get a ferry to the isle of Wight and as i boarded the ferry i was directed up a very steep ramp onto the mezzanine level and Sods Law, i had to park on the steep ramp with cars stacked up behind me...
i was wondering what i was going to do, particularly when the attendants on the deck were saying 'make sure your handbrakes are on!'
Luckily as i sat there the ramp then began to lift up and became level.......I did have a bit of a moment... Shocked

I got mine from Paddocks IIRC, wasn't BritPart, and was fine quality. Thumbs Up An engine to TDi for!

Blue Box timing belt tensioner....... F Off!!

I've been replacing mine today with one from A.F. And except one minor detail looks identical.

All was going well till I lost one of the shoe retaining springs which I've only just found. So get the girls off to bed and hopefully get the job finished.

Not wanting to count chickens before they've hatched but hopefully two good jobs today... map sensor and therefore engine sorted and hopefully hand brake too.

Hi Tom,
Fitting the cable involves removing the rear propshaft which in turn allows you to remove the handbrake drum on the rear of the transfer box. (Make sure that you chock the wheels before removing the propshaft to prevent the landrover rolling away!) You might have to run back the adjuster nut on the handbrake backplate to allow the drum to be removed. You can them see the handbrake shoes which are held in place with springs and clips. Removing these allows you to get the shoes off and unhook the cable. Acess to the lever end and the clevis pin that holds on the cable is possible once you remove the handbrake gaitor although you might have to remove the centre seatpan or get underneath to adjust the cable depending on how big your hands are!. Adjust the cable after you have refitted the drum and have adjusted the shoes back up by using the backplate adjuster. Run up the adjuster until the drum locks then back off 2 -3 "Cams" until the drum turns without binding. Pull on the handbrake a few times to centre the shoes before adjusting then once the drum is adjusted then adjust the 2 nuts on the cable at the lever end to remove the free play in the lever. Refit propshaft etc and then its beer time! Very Happy
