Eggy smell
While driving down the motorway I ran over an egg box. A few miles down the road I could smell an eggy smell and thought no more of it.
While on the rally stage, I could still smell the eggy smell while the engine was running,
So whipped off the seat and the seat box lid and the second battery was smoking via the inbuilt battery air vent and also the battery was warm to touch. So I disconnected the earth connection to stop the circuit.

I guess the battery is fecked (well prior to this it was'nt holding a charge as long as it used to) and will have to be replaced.
What causes this? Have the plates gone dry? I have not removed the bungs as the battery was rather warm and did not want to risk getting acid burns. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have had the very same thing, a few weeks back, one of my cells was dry and the battery monitor was indicating that the alternator was giving over 50 continuously to the battery. and a temperature of nearly 60 degrees.

I didn't stop thinking in the ejector seat of James bond, as my battery its just under the driver seat. so I stop the car run with the auxiliary batteries and disconnect the starter battery.

I remove everything and clean it, as the gas stick to the copper and leave it black. electrical contact cleaner work fine for me.

cheers

excossack,

if you decide to replace the battery, Tim @ mobilecentre usually has some good deals on odyssey batteries.

Cheers Bpman. It will have to be replaced at some point as its the 2nd battery that runs all the radios and charges while out on events! 1999 Defender TD5 110
