New Defender SW XS Purchase
Hi,

This is my first post on here, so be kind Laughing

I'm new to the world of defenders, being relatively young (24) and after saving for a few years I am taking the plunge!
I have been driving a Suzuki Jimny for the past 3-4years, so knowledgeable regarding 4x4's.

Decided I want the XS spec SW, mainly due to ABS and Traction control, as I believe this is as close as I can get to locking front and rear diff without fitting ARB kit. the spec also has a few nicer features like part leather and Bluetooth.

My main concern is the carpet trim. The rear of the MY13/14 station wagon comes with a painted finish as standard, which will be very prone to scratching from stray feet! Should I get the carpet trim or make life easier when cleaning?
I will be keeping it very clean, detailed every 6months and I have even ordered some ACF-50 spray ready!

Also, how prone are the newer trucks to leaking and rusting?! Mine won't be wading any time soon!

Thanks in advance, I hope to be on here regularly as I was on the bigjimny.com site!

In case you were not aware, you can order the carpet trim (straight from the factory - some dealers may not be aware of this).
Carpet Floor Trim 079AE £155.00
I have it on mine and prefer it to the rubber mat/finish.

Get it Dinitrolled.

Leaks - some do some don't - pot luck!!

Regards

Mark.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. Your comment about keeping it clean strikes a chord with myself as mine too is my pride and joy. With regards to maintaining and corrosion the following threads are perhaps two of the most detailed and comprehensive in keeping it tidy.

I will keep the underside fairly clean too, i have a right angled washer for the jet wash, and will keep it as salt free as poss. Will keeping it clean underneath keep corrosion away or are they really that bad... still?? You can expect corrosion if mud gets stuck and traps water in for long periods, but a 2013/14 car shouldn’t rust with normal road use

Not sure how keen i am on painting the underside, as i did this on the Jimny and found it made the corrosion worse... even after fully cleaning and wire brushing!

It won’t be until the summer before i get around to looking underneath, but is Dinitrol the best stuff? Are there any sections i should focus on?

Had a quick read after posting and realised it answered my questions

Will have to get busy with the ACF-50 when I take delivery of the truck!

Welcome Smile

I had a 90 hard top (van - type) tdci which I fitted folding seats & rear windows to myself.

I wanted to protect the floor and wheel arches as it seems you do and this is what I did, in case it is of any use.

I bought a full width (inc over wheel arches) floor mat, (I got the genuine one but there are many available) and fitted it, fitting the seats, cargo tie down loops and other bolts through the mat to clamp it down.

I put a bead of silicone around the edges to stop water getting under, and clamped the end near the rear door underneath the steel door strip.

I was very happy with the finished result!

This is the kind of mat I mean, although you don't have to get Gen LR.

“a 2013/14 car shouldn’t rust with normal road use”

a) a Land Rover Defender isn’t a car;

b) it will;

c) keeping it clean and blinging it up is like not sh…ging the girlfriend and buying her expensive clothes, so she’s fresh and pretty for the next guy.

I'd advise to go with rubber matting and not carpet, stays a lot cleaner generally and won't start to smell after a while either. Really depends on what you will be doing with it, if you won't be going off reading or anywhere wet and muddy you shouldn't need to worry. Personally I prefer the rubber. ____\We|Will|Win/___

The rubber mat is loads better. My carpet stinks, because I get in and out with muddy wet boots. Also after a good shower water gets in.

It appears that all 2014 MY Defenders are coming with the ABS as a std feature according to a salesman who is communicating with me. Maybe I should just stop negotiations and get to the head of the queue to buy yours in a couple of years time. You sound most fastidious in your approach to vehicle hygiene and wear and tear. There are no shortage of suppliers of plastic/rubber/composite industrial flooring/matting, sold by the metre and easily cut to size - much cheaper and perhaps of a higher quality than OEM spec.

As for rusting - this has put me off buying a Defender for years - no reason other than the manufacturer has shaved every penny they can from the spec and are happy to see their product/brand/reputation/customers suffer. Driving behind a recent model Defender and seeing a rusty rear cross-member just looks awful.

They're not all like that. Mine is 4 yrs old and rear crossmember is pristine. Just wipe it with ACF every time I wash it. Sprayed inside every year. Whistle LANDYWATCH

Sorry Off Topic David, on your rear two seats the retaining straps on them..... Did they come with the seats or something you've added mine are different although the same style seats, they don't want to stay in their place because the plastic clips keep opening under just the weight of the seat alone.
Not the end of the road but doesn't look right and a bit annoying. ____\We|Will|Win/___

They were just some £2/3 Velcro bungee straps from halfords... Wrapped them around the bracket at the rear and stretched them around the front into the bar on the front. Seemed to work pretty well Smile Cheers, David

I disagree with it being cost cutting causing the rust.
It's just an old design which collects mud and water badly!

Keep it clean and rinse it out regularly with fresh water and it'll be fine.

Most cars just aren't kept on the road long enough to rust, and if they are then there's normally some plastic cover stopping it being visible. I've know toyota, subaru, even a mercedes ML270 need welding at less than 10/15 years old to pass an MOT.

The leaks however...! Cheers, David
