Sorry but for a decent cb signal I'm afraid you're stuck with a purpose made cb aerial. If you can have a chat with the likes of Jim from 4x4cb he can give you no end of pointers for the best solution to your wants. He is difficult to contact but the best way is to fire off an email with the questions you want answering and sit patiently, he often only looks at his emails at some godforsaken hour in the morning which can be a little offputting when you want an answer NOW!

ok thanks guys, looks like i'll have to get a proper CB aerial.
think thunder pole do one as a deal with the polar venus so i'll probably go for that or get one from maplin or the CB shack down the road. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Could you not use a magnetic based aerial on the roof by fixing a steel plate to the roof. The plate could be suitably finished and secured either by permanent fixings or some form of adhesive or double sided tape.

So my birthday came and went and a CB and aerial arrived
Fitted it today, very pleased with it! Hmm But you get the idea anyway, can unscrew aerial, unplug hand unit and it's all neat and you'd barely know it's there, also comes with battery pack and short aerial to use it as a handheld.. It's how the bracket is positioned. It presses against the roof and I think it'll push into it. Even the natural wiggling of the antenne will start scratching the paint of.
I'd mount it at the back of the car so it swivels away from the car or turn the bracket around so it further away from the roof. By the way, I have the same bracket on my roofrack. Click image to enlarge |

Cheers guys, good point I hadn't thought much about..
The aerial itself is very flexible so it's only really a branch hitting the bracket itself which is an issue, it feels very solid which I guess is part of the issue. The gutter itself is filled with a rubber/foam lining so there's a bit of give there and it actually could probably slide a little if it took a hefty knock, but it's a good point and I may consider moving it rearwards... I'm only going to fit the aerial for laning trips so I'll have another look for the Xmas outing.. It only takes a few min to fit so can move it easily if it's a problem! Well pleased though... Depends on the laning you plan on doing, but most of the stuff we do involves pushing through low hanging hedges/trees at some point and anything on the Defender above windscreen height takes a battering.
I made a bracket that I clamped between the top rear door hinge and the body work (I didn't want to drill any holes in the roof) and fastened the CB aerial to that. Its protected by the roof of the car but high up and does a great job. I can post some pics if you are interested. cheers simon Last edited by couplands on 14th Dec 2013 8:10pm. I can picture exactly what you mean, sounds a good idea..

I had the same mount fitted to a 90 a couple of years ago, the only problem was that when it vibrated it rubbed on the roof and took the paint off. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.
