Memory Map data usage
Having just acquired my mother's old iPad, (albeit an iPad 1, fortunately with sim enabled) and got Memory Map on it, I am just wondering how much data memory map may use on say a greenlaning day out, turned on the whole time. Obviously there'd be a few other programs running in the background, such as email, but my primary source is my phone for that.

I am curious because I don't really need to use the pad all the time, and MM is pretty much the only conceivable thing I would use it for. Orange do a PAYG package, with the simcard, for 5.1p per MB. I know if I use it frequently this would in no way be worth it, but for at most a couple of times a month, no other package would be worth it in my view. I have 1gb of data on my phone, which I'm struggling to use up, and I'm on it a lot, so it makes no sense having a massive data limit for this ipad.

If anyone can shed some light on how much it's likely to use on such a day out, I'd be keen to know.

Memory map you upload the map you want prior to going out. It then just uses the iPads GPS.

I think that's how it works. As I have used it where there is no signal.

Ah right, excuse my ignorance, I only just got it tonight!

Does the GPS not use any data then? (I really know FA about technology!) 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

I very rarely have 3G turned on, on my ipad and memory map functions perfectly without. That's assuming you have the maps loaded already, as if you buy maps on the fly you'll need a data connection to down load them.

Also you may well find that it acquires a better fix with wifi turned off as well.

I'm still on an initial Ł10 payg card from 2 years ago, so either it uses very little or they have forgotten about me Thumbs Up having said that I don't download much when on 3G, just the odd web page and PayPal usage.

GPS and 3G/cellular signal are completely unrelated, yes.

No knowledge of MM but sounds like maps are stored locally like a tomtom, rather than downloaded continuously like google maps or equivalent.

Therefore unless you are wanting to use email etc you shouldn't need 3G on at all. Cheers, David

If you're talking about route plotting memory, it's very small.
I've run all day with running out.

I don't even have SIM card in my iPad. Memory map does not require it. If I needed to I can use my iphone as internet hotspot for iPad whilst out and about, but not needed for MM.

The only time that Memory Map requires internet access is if you want to activate 25000:1 maps whilst on the move - but you would need to have purchased a chunk of digital download maps.

I have the full UK at 50000:1 on my iPad which I find good enough for Greenlaning.

One word of warning for those thinking of getting an iPad - it's only the 3G enabled versions that have the GPS chip..... 2013 Aintree Green 110 Station Wagon SX
