Epic Mot Failure....Help?
My old girl went in for her MOT today.

My first mistake was feeling confident about it as she went in and failed spectacularly...

Failed on swivels, Center ball joint (both of which aren’t too terrible) headlight adjustment (seriously?) and rear cross member (ah....)

Looking at a £2300 repair bill which I have no hope of paying for at the moment as I've only just started work

The swivels I can do myself and the centre ball joint I have heard is a pain but can have a look at it. However the rear cross member I have no idea how bad it is or whether they are making a tiny hole into a manhole cover...
Won’t know until tomorrow morning when I go look at it but they are quoting £1500 to cut out and replace the whole cross member (which isn’t terrible, but still expensive)
If It’s Just plating I can do it, but if it is a whole new cross member I think I will have to let someone with more experience do that.

I'm going to give gigglepin a ring in the morning once I have looked at the extent of the damage, does anyone sles have any ideas? In Tunbridge Wells area?

That seams expensive for just a cross member as a guy by me is only quoting just over 2k for a galvanised chassis swap.

Quite. It is 1600 for an entire new galvenised chassis. If you are for it do the swap yourself and never have any of the rot problems again...

If funds are short i would patch repair the rear cross member while you do some phoning around to find a repairer to replace it when funds permit.
Whats the problem with the swivels ? is it just play or are they badly pitted ? If its play then its just a matter of removing shims to take up the play, If they are pitted and leaking then its still a DIY job. Mr Haynes is your friend ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

Sorry Should have been more specific.
The swivel pins are warn so they need replacing which I'm not scared to do because its not difficult.
The center beam joint is a bit more of a task as they can be bar-stewards to release which is why most people just drop the whole assembely and forget about it...

I dont have the time or space or money to do a galve chassis swap as much as id like to and the rest of the chassis is in 99% condition, its just the rear crossmsmber where the last owner didn't clean it out properly has rotten away.
From what I understood from the man at Lr he said where the chassis rails meets the Crossmember so a fairly structural place. As I say if I can fix it I will have a damn good go but will have to drop the fuel tank to do so which again, time.

Look here at the prices for new rear cross members ...
http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/land-rove...ssmembers/

Even with outrageous hourly labour charges, I'm really struggling to justify £1500! Over £1200 in labour? I don't think so! An engine to TDi for!

You may not neeed to remove the fuel tank if the rot is only on the outer side of the chassis rail.

I doubt the swivel pins are worn as i posted earlier its usually just a matter of de-shimming the top swivel to eliminate the play in the tapered roller bearings. 2005 Td5 90 XS

These may be worth a call:

http://www.themanforlandrovers.com/ in East Hoathly. Never used them.

http://www.rcv.co.uk/ in Paddoc Wood. Used twice both times were excellent service.

Gigglepin you already know.

Believe it or not but Horsepower in Tonbridge have an excellent name sell loads of Land Rovers and were Harwoods LR MOT centre for ages until they build the new dealership http://www.horsepower-motor-centre.co.uk/. I have bought 2 faultless cars fron them in the last couple of years.

Hope the above helps. BM52

Bit More info, Its a pre-td5 110.

The replacement rear cross members look good, I'd probebly go for a heavy duty 3mm one just to give myself some piece of mind, does anyone have any experiance with this?

@Lou: Hear what your saying on the shims, I'll have a good poke and root around tomorrow to see if it see if it has any Shims to remove. If so then should cross that off nicely.

I don't know if this will help but my S2A is having its rear cross-member replaced in 1 week at Rogers of Bedford.

They have told me that it will come to a total of £500 - £600 inclusive of labour, so it might be worth giving them a ring. Thumbs Up

From Kent it would be worth a 1 - 2 hour trip.

They have always looked after my Series 2A brilliantly Mr. Green and take the time to do what is right, not just what is quick, easy and profitable for them.

the last rear cross member we did took half a day (tdi 90 hardtop) no rear fuel tank to move. its was £151 + VAT Bearmach part from Exeter 4x4 store.

£1500 is ridiculous.

If its just where the legs meet, then just cut out the bad bit and fill the hole.

A frame, easiest and simplest is buy a joint and the fitting and drop the whole lot in as you say.

if your doing swivels from wear (how did they determine that - they leaking?) it would be worth doing complete hub revuilds - King pins, hub bearings etc. Cheers

Thank You for all the reply’s guys.

Now its failed its Mot it’s a bit more difficult because it’s no longer road legal so cant travel too far.

I'll take some photos tomorrow and upload (when I figure out how) to show you guys.

When I'm there I'll have a long discussion with them to discuss what the options are- get it all costed in paper then have a ring round see if they can match it.

I think it may be a case of they don't want to do it so are being purposefully expensive. Unfortunately I can't call there bluff...

You are allowed to drive to and from a place of repair or for a retest without a current MOT. 2005 Td5 90 XS
