What to replace the 90 with?
Hi all,

Usually lurk over on the Disco forum but thought my question may be better answered here. Got to replace an employees 90 Hardtop with something but struggling to know what for apart from Jap pick ups.

Reluctant to have another 90 due to lack of frills but have been very happy with it on the whole. Would really like some sort of 4x4 Commercial but they are just few and far between. Currently got a Hi Lux D/Cab on demo and going to try a Ranger. VW Amarok seems popular but 5.5k more than the Hi Lux or Ranger. Never have been a lover of pick ups on cart springs but what else is there?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Does depend on its usage. If you need to tow there's only a few to choose from because most jap stuff has a 2700-3000kg limit.

What sort of frills are you after??

Defender 110 XS Utility! Ticks all the boxes! Commercial, more frills and unbelievable value retention

Compares well with any of the above listed DCPUs price wise, and will be worth a lot more in a few years time Cheers, David

I was in the same position a while ago. Didn't like the VW, very notchy/heavy gearbox and didn't pull well. Poor fuel and under power reports on the new Hi Lux. Favourite was the Isuzu D Max. Drove well unladen and comes with 5 year warranty and returns 38 mpg-well worth a look.

I kept my 90 though Wink

at the end of the day, whatever generic jap dcpu you get, theyll all be dull, depreciate like a stone and get you ignored out on the roads... but at least youll get 5-10 more mpg right?!

the defender 110 xs utility actually stacks up well on paper, but its something you do with your heart (as any defender obviously)

if its a brain decision then save yourself a tiny bit of money and get a boring jap pickup Smile but youll miss the random conversations with fellow owners, the waves and the go-anywhere feeling

i guess it really depends on the employee's feelings?

say you do go for a jap though, id say the hilux has the quality, reputation and service quality over the lot, and a bit better image & residuals... Cheers, David

Its a no brainer to me - change it for a 110 Pick up with Carpets, aircon, and cold climate pack. What more comforts could you need?

Disco commercial, if they still make them. Should fall into the right tax brackets then.

Have considered a 110 utility as could really do with a bit more space for him. I've got a D4 Commercial and its fantastic but well out of budget for employees vehicle. The jap pick ups are dull I have to say, but agree that if its another Defender it will need A/C as he nearly cooked during the summer. The 110 Utility doesn't actually compare that well with the Jap pick ups though. A new one is several thousand more but I guess the flip side is that you will see it back in the residual when you change it. Assuming the Defender replacement (if it ever arrives) isn't so good that it de values the Defender. Unlikely I guess?

The jap stuff is no good for me as they can't tow my trailer. Most of them are also pickups so you can't get long items in. Yes they can do better fuel economy until you put weight in them.

I'd have a 110 utility with cold climate pack and A/C. Will hold its value well and pretty much will give 26mpg whatever you throw at it.

I believe the only other truck that is any good is the higher spec 3.2 ford ranger as it also tows 3.5tonne. By the time you have speced one up it will be close to 30k

I know exactly what you're saying. The trouble with spending that sort of money on a pick up is you know you will never see most of it again where as the Defender nearly has a guaranteed future value. The new Isuzu's also now tow 3.5t as well but never really liked them.

I had a Mitsubishi Barbarian as a demo car a few weeks back and whilst it was comfy and loaded with toys it had a dreadful flat spot in all gears.

I assume this is due to the ecu settings to comply with emission regs. A friend of mine has a 3.2 Toyota pickup that suffers the same issue and has been back to the dealer 3 times in 6 months fort warranty work.

The ride was very choppy but it can of course take a ton of sand in the back so a hard ride makes sense as a van , but as a family car it wouldn't work quite as well.

I think you should replace the 90 with a .............................. 90 and add the toys you want yourself.

I am in the same situation myself self. I currently have a 90. Haven't been able to sell it at the minute. Really thinking 110 or second hand D4 commercial. The only thing that is making think twice is you only get 2 seats in the D4 and for the same money you get 5 in the utility.

The disco commercial really seem to hold their price.
