i think you are over complicating it.

i use a sledge hammer and an appropriate size impact socket and knock them through. Cheers

Or socket and vice,
If needed drill them full of holes first.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't like hitting things and this can be used "in the field" if it works.

Appropriate bolt - or studding, nut/s, substantial washers and make sure you are pulling in true - yes it will work. The old Bushwacker tool is basically the same. Steve.

Have tried similar things in the past to remove bushes but usually ended up stripping the thread on the nut or the bolt or both due to the stresses involved,If you can weld 3 or 4 nuts together to spread the load then you have a good chance of it working.
Or you could just buy a bush extractor ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

If you do manage to get the bushes out a tip for fitting the new bushes is to put the new ones in the freezer over night and take them out just before fitting this makes them contract slightly and enables fitting also use a bit of copper slip on them to prevent them rusting in place. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Any reason you cant use the Defender chassis and a (bottle) jack, also would'nt copper grease rot the rubber, would it not be better using proper silicon grease?? Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Perhaps i should have been more precise i did,nt mean put the grease on the rubber but to wipe a smear of copper slip around the inside of the bush appature in the panhard rod.
I would,nt mind betting that you would jack the Defender up before you push the bush out if using the chassis and bottle jack ! but its worth a go as it costs nothing. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I've just changed all the bushes on mine, luckily I had a 15ton press. It's amazing how much force is required to remove some of the smaller bushes.

In the past I have cut a section of the bush out with a hacksaw and then just chiseled them out, it works quite well.

A quick search and I found this:

Hiya

If big hammers and air chisels are not your choice, I sometimes use a small die grinder type tool however its air powered and works very well. So far is unbeaten although you do have to drill some of the rubber bush away as it clogs up the carbide bits its also VERY good at correcting your aim if it all goes wrong and your drill wanders off a bit.

As for getting the bushes back in all previous ways work ok and if you add a little swarfega or even washing up liquid the rubber sections go in a treat as sometimes the addition of oil or grease directly to rubber can make them swell a bit.
hope this helps martin

I've used a m12x150 bolt with big washers to press in many bushes last year on my skoda fabia and series 1 80 (spring bushes in chassis/brake+clutch bronze chassis bushes) it works very well.. use with a bit of ky jelly and it will work VERY well Smile

Can u not just burn them a bit with welding gear then when inner metal bit drops out just bash the rest of bush out.this is the easiest Thumbs Up
Just my opinion

It was a well practised, recognised method of removal for years but you're not allowed to play with matches now unless you've filled in the correct forms Whistle
