so far as I can see there is no down side to running with headlights all the time.

if you read all of the general rules there are no requirements NOT to have your headlights on only not to dazzle.

There are however lots of times when you are required to have your headlights on. So the easiest way to comply with those it have them on all the time.

whats' the down side?

I would suggest it is at the least lazy and at worst driving without due care and attention. If you take road craft seriously then you will know when you need lights. If driving is getting in the way of you being at your next appointment on time as seems to be the case for the majority of people then get a taxi and save the rest of us from your not giving a damn.[/quote

Sorry if I offended I was asking what, technically, is the problem about driving with headlights on during the day. Is it because it distracts people , or means that people are less likely to see the people without their headlights on? and is that right that it is an offence to drive with lights on? i have never heard of that before. It appears to be the rule in places like Sweden.

can you expand on the problems for a dunce please

Sorry. I was not casting aspersions directly at your ability to drive. It was a rhetorical point about perceived driving standards generally. Your points re distraction are the issues that get my goat. Even more generally I think the problem stems from knee jerk legislation a case of y is a problem let us outlaw it instead of y is a problem lets improve x then y goes away, if you follow. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

If the sun is blinding me ill leave e. Off but if the weathera a bit dim or I realised im struggling to spot the wonderful man driving that lovely bmw that didnt come with indicators as standard, then ill throw the lights on.

I blame the army as its standard practise to drive everywhere with lights on its kinda built in now.
