vacuum pump oil leak

After replacing this vacuum pump twice due to massive oil leak on the front pulley, I decided to investigate. The last one i fitted was the modified part that adds a second seal and due to the service bulletins from land rover that suggests dust is the problem, but they still dont last. The reason they fail because they the oil seal used is cheap and inadequate for the demanding application. The seal in question is appears to be made by dowty uk and to be nitrile, it deals with very hot oil holding a lot of soot and carbon. First the seal lip material goes sticky and picks up the carbon, then it goes hard and brittle and scores a deep groove in the shaft then you use a lot of oil all of a sudden. I have my original vacuum pump back on the vehicle now, spent £4 on a quality vitron double lip seal and fitted that instead, no more leaks, no more buying a new pump, easy job to do and piece of mind it you are going to remote areas.

TD5 vacuum pump is part of DC Alt or you referring to ford 2.4 engine vacuum pump

I replaced the vacuum pump recently and it has been ok so far. Do you have a part number and supplier for these viton seals incase my new pump fails?

20x32x7mm SKF Viton Oil Seal Double Lip R23/TC Viton Rubber Stainless Steel Garter Spring

Amazon, ebay or any seal specialist, other makes are propably available but SKF is quality

I fitted above seal to the vehicle's original leaky pump about 18 months and 20K miles ago, after a brand new replacement pump failed leaky after 8k miles in under a year. I then modified the new pump with the same seal for a spare, but haven't needed yet and dont think I will for a long time.

I am assumming that when this seal is installed, the seal lips are running on a new bit of shaft because the failed pump always has a deep groove in the shaft cut by the useless original seal when it goes brittle! You will need a puller to get the drive pulley off and dont forget to re-fit the circlip
