Allways do a job properly
Apart from my ongoing ABS illumination I also have leaky fuel pressure regulator, never rains but it pours Rolling Eyes One of the by products of a leaking FPR is that it drips on the starter motor and can give starting problems as the solonoid contacts become dirty and won't work properly. As a result of me ignoring the problem, time and money a contibuting factor, my 110 decided to give me a nudge. There was me on a building site, finished what I was doing, loaded up my tools and got in turned the key and click, click click click click. As I wasn't too pushed for time, out with the spanners and get underneath and whipped the solonoid out, cleaned it up with contact cleaner, liberally sprayed inside the housing and wiped it off. Then all that remained was to put it back together. I've done this job a few times over the years and have got away with not disconnecting the battery.......we all know where I'm going with this Rolling Eyes As I started to fit it back together, big flash and I'd arced the return spring in the barrel. Part of the spring had dissappeared but the amusing/concerning bit was the instant ignition of the residual contact cleaner! The panic from the chap that had wandered over to see what I was doing was a sight to see and I'm lucky that he didn't actually fire off the extinguisher that he came running back with as he was aiming it right at my face, I'd allready stopped the flames so it was a bit pointless. So left the solonoid out, put the cover back on and enlisted the plasterer gang to give me a push start.
Got home, took the starter motor off, that damned 15mm nut on the back is a pain, filed down the blob of welded spring, put it all back together, refitted, cursed the 15mm nut again and now all sorted.
So the moral of the story is............disconnect the power to electrical components when working on them, don't take short cuts!

Thank you for posting that.

I've had exactly the same problem - fuel pressure regulator dripping onto the starter motor contact causing the thing not to turn over.

I removed the external connections and sprayed with cleaner and all was well but I bought a solenoid/contact repair kit anyway (10 y/o vehicle) and have been intending to fit it for ages.

I have to say I probably wouldn't have bothered to disconnect the battery if I'm honest with myself - but I will now.

You should always really but resetting the radio/clock etc is a pain. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

You can get away with disconnecting the live feed into the solonoid on the side, cover the bare contacts and you're good to go. That saves the proceedures you go through to disconnect the battery and you're under there allready.
