Axle stands or ramps or both perhaps?
I need to sort out my car maintenance equipment at home, the thing i'm really short of is stuff to lift the car and keep it there safely.

So what works best for a Defender, Axle stands or ramps or both perhaps, trolley jack or hi lift jack? What gets used in your garages and what gathers dust in a corner?

I'm talking on the drive type work i've not got a flash heated garage!

I use both ramps and axle stands, as I use a _ _ tonne bottle jack I need axle stands (the generic ratchet type about Ł17 off the bay E, Amazon or Costco).Ramps are great for just ease of use (jetwashin, etc), obviously, no good if yer takin a wheel off.I like bottle jacks, not the most stable of jacks, but it does force you to use an axle stand.

I use a bottle jack with two axle stands. But what you need will all depend on what type of work you're doing! For normal DIY-able jobs, bottle jack and axle stands will be fine Thumbs Up An engine to TDi for!

If at home I use my trolley jack & axel stands, and chock the wheels. If at the roadside I use the LR bottle jack. I wouldnt dare crawl underneath without axel stands and the jack in place. In fact I try and avoid crawling under my Defender at all. Id rather pay someone else to take the risk.

Same with working at height at home. If it means climbing up to the top of some long ladders, I have money saved in the bank to give to someone else to do it. Adopting this approach has helped enable me to stay alive on this planet for 41 years so far. Very Happy

Be absolutely certain that you have no other option than to use a hilift for general servicing they are evil finger trapping harbingers of death for most of the time unless you are stuck out in the wild then they are your best friend. For general use a decent trolley jack is good though if you can get a disco1 bottle jack with the proper u on the top that will be good too. With axle stands the heavier the better I use ratchet ones rated at 3.5 tonnes each same with ramps though by the same token you do need to be able to move them too so not that heavy. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Both for me . Safety First . Loads of space using the ramps but I often take a wheel off whilst on the ramp and use 2 axle stands .

I have four axle stands but it is time consuming and a little tiring on the arms all that jacking for fitting and removing them (or so the wife tells me Rolling with laughter ) Often wondered if it would be possible to drive up on four individual ramps, like the ones pictured above. Two long ones, though safer, would be heavy to shift and store(or so the wife says Rolling with laughter ) 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Local lad was doing work under a car. Had it up on various bits and pieces. It slipped, trapping him underneath. Was lying across his pelvis. Luckily his mother heard the noise and phoned for help. Seems he'll be out of action for a year.He was very lucky. Does'nt pay to skimp on the proper equipment, no matter how small the job. That is why I insist on the Defender being properly placed on stands before I let the wife go crawling around underneath it Rolling with laughter 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

My dad had 2 ramps fabricated at work: I can sit underneath with headroom, tis brilliant!

Dead safe but also bloody heavy! (Takes 2 to move each HALF ramp (ie each 1/4 of the whole setup))

Never ever get under a car without it being properly supported. A long time ago, a friend of mine was killed when his Capri fell on him. He'd only used a jack and it slipped.
I have always made double / triple sure it's safe if I have to get under, but prefer to take it to the garage and let them put on the ramp. Sad Series IIa Lightweight - Long Gone
