Just wanted to say a big thank you to Chris Kill for his help last week. I've just completed an 1600 mile trip around France and back in my Puma 110. Drove well and with the Dynamat sound proofing front to back and the Bell remap it was quiet (for a Defender!) and fast.

I had a small film of oil on the underside of the bonnet (above the screenwash bottle - blown back by the fan) when I reached Bordeaux. Bit concerting so I contacted Chris via text - 10 minutes later he was on the phone with some pointers/ideas of where it was coming from. Suffice to say after checking a couple of bolts and tightening them up it doesn't leak anymore after another 500 miles.

Its really difficult to trace because at the time I couldn't remove the fan to see where it was coming from without it getting blown backwards towards the engine.... Confused

I tightened the bolts on the front of the timing cover....one was very loose and checked all the hoses for splits/clips. I also checked all visible bolts in the area and tightened where appropriate as advised by Chris. It stopped the leak and I had no more problems when driving around locally on short trips... until I looked underneath yesterday and have a palm size pool of oil directly under the breather pipe on the front axle after it has stood overnight after a 400 mile trip Big Cry I cleaned it up, re-seated the axle breather pipe and so far all good - no more leaks. Could it be pressure build up in the axle I wonder... Question

Still not 100% where it is coming from TBH. It only appears to do it after a long run at speed. Its a minimal amount but needs addressing... will whip the fan off this week and take more in depth look. Cheers,

I have a very faint oil spray mark (really just a line of very fine oil marks) under the bonnet. almost directly behind the washer bottle and directly above the brake vacuum. I was worried that it might be the brake vacuum that is strating to leak (this is a well know point of faillure...?).

I have tried to see where it is from but i can not find any "wet" areas anywhere close to the brake vacuum?

NO OIL on the ground or anywhere to be seen for that matter.

Most of the oil was concentrated around here but I think it was being blown up from underneath:-

Oil was appearing underneath the bonnet on the right hand side above the washer bottle back to the heater box (I'd cleaned it off when this pic was taken)

Vacuum pump is known for its problems (if it is the earlier one (changed some time in 2009)). Very cheap and easy change Thumbs Up But not known of any 'starting to go' normally noticeable by quite a bit of oil.

Mmmm...

Mine is a 2011 X-Tech 110.

So supposedly the "new" vacuum pump.

And it is minimal amounts. I've been involved in a full blown vacuum pump.....nasty....whole engine sprayd with copious amounts of oil.

So hopefully not that....but from where then?

Possibly the gasket (pump to engine block), rather than the pump seal? Mine was as you described- oil all over engine, bonnet and even on the wing top.

It's interesting you mention the Vacuum pump as the oil was congregating around the gasket where it bolts on.. perhaps it has gone. My 2.4 is late 2008 build so you may have something there... Thumbs Up

I've just searched the site and ...

So, ordered a new one from local dealer and will fit and report back. They confirmed a new gasket(s) for the pump following initial failures. Cheers,

Vacuum pump probably came up with many replies.

When mine went I got the replacement unit (Double seal) and the gasket- for a few £ there is no point scrimping on it. That was 2 years ago and no problems since *Touches wood*.

Plus you don't really hear of them going any more.

Just what the parts guy said. They use to keep them on the shelf as they were always going, but now they don't see that many failing, so they are an order item from LR. Cheers,

Shocked I see the problem...... your bonnet is FAR too clean, are you related to Zagato? lol. TBH, if that is all there is there isn't much need for concern- just keep an eye on it every now and then and wait to see if it gets worse Smile. Or were these pictures after a clean?
