On a series (2 1/4) there is no expansion tank, instead there is the cap on the radiator and a small pipe right below it such that the cap works are a non return valve. A small hose then goes into a atmospheric reservoir which is crutially connected to bottom. The idea is that every time the engine cools the low pressure that is created sucks coolant from the reservoir into the radiator. Likewise when the engine heats up any access fluid is pushed out into the reservoir. On a series, when you remove the cap it should always be full to the brim. If not this system is not working. Would Iveco not have intended for this cap to work the same and therefor it's not really a direct replacement for the LR cap, which is just a pressure release valve on a pressurized expansion tank? Is there a pressure rating stated on the Iveco cap at all? |

Dinnu two posts above posted this link https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic44373.html
In the first post of that topic Dgardel states “4 months ago, working on my "monster" (the Mi.G not my Defender) noted that the cap of the expansion tank IVECO might be fine. Control excess pressure from 1.0 to 1.2 bar, perfect !!!! ” So looks like the the pressure rating is 1 - 1.2 bar ![]() |

That’s correct 1 - 1.2 bar. I have one of these purchased from an iveco dealership. They are from fairly old vans and getting harder to come by genuine ones. The parts guy was surprised I was putting on a defender.

Does this mean I have to buy a couple of spares now, just to be sure?
I have this cap and the AlliSport coolant tank with the sight glass. The sight glass makes it easier to ascertain the current coolant levels though I haven't worked out if I should keep the thing filled to the top fo the sight glass or not. No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy |
