silly questoin about battery and ECU
Do remaps/programs on ECU fail or get lost if you disconnect the battery or if it fails ?
someone told me that a dead battery affects memory on ECU?
The land rover i viewed in malta had a dead battery on, but speedo still showed the mileage.

thanks
joseph

No, the ECU file is stored in the ECU and doesn't disappear if the battery is disconnected (although, thinking out loud, I wonder how long it would stay there, or if the ECU has a battery inside it....)

the speedo mileage is held in a processor that has bytes erased in it, to show the current figure, so that won't erase, but the trip is held by the vehicle battery, so that will reset to 0 if the battery is disconnected.

HI

well the land rover in question has been sat there for a lot of time, (that white one i linked over here still thinking of trying a test drive if still there Rolling Eyes )

When you refer to trip - does it mean a trip meter? i don't think it had on the speedo - just recorded mileage (unless found on ecu.)

thanks joseph

The MAP or fuel file is probably held in NVM (non volatile memory) so a power loss should not affect it at all .....otherwise there might be a lot of 'dead' Defenders around........... Big Cry

your comment makes sense. funny i cannot remember who told me so...

probably i was talking to a td5 about avoiding fires by doing a battery isolator in periods of not use but he told me it might cause problems to ecu.

cheers all

I have never seen a manufacturer state that long term storage would cause problems with an ECU, as it's very common to park a motorbike up for 6 months in the winter with the battery in the house on trickle charge,it's normal for the ECU to re-adjust slightly once the engine is re-started.I had a KTM motorbike and I think Corsa's that once engine is re-started (after battery disconnection) do not use the throttle for 10-15 minutes,to allow ECU to adjust.
And you don't lose the information on a flash drive when it's not being used.
