Vacuum Pump
I have an annoying rattle coming from the engine bay - sounds like a heavier tappet rattle (not tappets!). It has been suggested that it could be the vacuum pump.

The more I think about it the more I tend to agree and I have just realised that the brakes are a little spongy - I didnt notice at 1st as it is a long time since I have driven it (about 7 months).

so.. is the vacuum pump a serviceable item? Could it be a simple blockage or am I just as well fitting a new pump?

Not certain on the later 300tdi ones, but a 200tdi is easily opened up and the blades etc replaced.

I should have said - it is a 200tdi.

I will take it off and have a look.

I rebuilt mine a while back as I was getting little vacuum in the brakes. I think there are 3 bolts holding it to the engine. Once off there are 2 bolts to get the lid off. You can change the blades and the o-ring.

I did on mine and it made little difference to the engine.

Engine was changed over christmas and it worked brilliantly after that, so I reckon the mechanism inside the engine was at fault, rather than the pump itself.

the blades are pretty cheap though.

Worth swapping the hose over too.

I also changed the valve on the front of the servo as I wasn't fully happy with the way it was working.

What were your symptoms? Purely poor brakes or rattle too?

No rattle. I had very little vacuum - ie the pedal went solid pretty quickly - eg if in traffic.

A defender 300 tdi with crap brakes, first thing to check is the servo. They seem to crack along the press line on the front face under the mounting stud (as you look at it head on) then they loose vacuum 07 Defender 90 TDCI
