Do I need a new alternator?
Hi

As per title, is it the alternator at fault?

Began having starting problems, a couple of slow starts.

Then it wouldn't start after sitting for 20 mins. Got going with a push start (roll down hill)

Wouldn't start again with the symptom of fuel pump relay clicking. Swapped relay for a known good and same clicking. Put my relay in another td5 and it starts.

Tried different batteries but same symptoms. Not brand new but at least one known good one.

Put an extra earth from battery to engine block but no difference.

Put a booster on the battery and it will start but leave running and after 20 mins it cut out.

Multimeter shows voltage dropping: 12+ at start up and instead of increasing to 14+ it steadily drops. Faster with lights, fan etc.

What do you think, Is it the alternator or something else?

Sounds like a voltage regulator or rectifier problem 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

Is that part of the alternator? Or a separate unit?
