Confused: a Mantec carrier that isn't a Mantec carrier?!
I bought a Land Rover Genuine Parts Mantec spare wheel carrier at the LRO show from Withams, and started fitting it today. However, it's not the same as a normal Mantec one and I'm confused.

It's come with some parts that I don't know what they do, any suggestions?

Firstly, this bit. Mine has a rubber nipple of sorts, then there's also a rubber socket that seems to fit over it (and looks like it's been put over it here).

Then there's the sticky-outy bit here on the side that most don't seem to have:

Finally I seem to have three really long M8 bolts, a couple of short M12 bolts, 6 medium length M8 bolts that match the ones I took out of the old wheel carrier, an L bracket, two large (M30?) blanking grommet and a few other nuts and bolts that don't seem to do anything.

I'm confused, I seem to have bought something that's Mantec but not the normal Mantec (and it definitely says Mantec on the piston) because it didn't come with mounting plates either, just nuts and bolts. It was all sealed up and it all seems to work together but it's weird.

I was wondering if the L bracket and the rubber bits were supposed to be something to hold the door open? Something along the lines of attach the socket to the bracket, the bracket to the door then when it's open the nipple will fit in to the socket and want to stay there.

That doesn't explain the "handle" part though.

Erm, not sure! So far it's fitted fine on to my hardtop.

I've currently got it loosely fitted with bolts in all the holes that seem necessary but still have a heap of stuff that hasn't been used.

Tomorrow's job is to check the alignment and tighten it all up properly but it was getting too dark to do that earlier and I was hungry!

the withams ones are heavy duty mod spec ones made by mantec retail circa 414 i think

rumour had it they sold 6 plts of them at the show

I got to their stand at about 10:30-11AM on the Saturday and bought the last one. There were two piles about 5ft high of ones that had been sold and were waiting for collection.

Given the price they were selling them for (£120) it's not surprising.

It's all fitted now and seems to be doing its thing.
The sticking out arm on the side seems to support the tyre if you just put the wheel straight on the carrier, but if you do that then as you open it the tyre gets caught in the hinge. It came with a spare set of three wheel nuts, so I've wound them all the way on to the studs as spacers then put the original ones on the outside to clamp the wheel on. You don't get to use all the threads in the nuts but at least that way it's clamping the metal wheel rather then just relying on the side of the tyre for support.

Now I've looked in daylight the rubber nipple thing is definitely supposed to hold the door open, but I've got a gas strut so haven't bothered. Does a normal Mantec have that?

I still have a load of spare nuts and bolts with no where obvious to put them!

Now I just need to make a mount for my waffle boards.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had this problem, I've just fitted the exact same carrier. I haven't bothered with all the extra bits as I just couldn't work out where they went, the L bracket and that extra bit pictured above seemed to me like a bump stop, to stop the door opening too wide and the tyre making contact with the back of the car

I still don't know if I have mine aligned properly, as the piston moves up and down in the carrier when I open and close the door, along the slot. Does yours do this?

It did until I adjusted it properly Smile

The nut that holds the piston in should be tight and not move. If it "needs" to move to make the carrier work then you haven't got the hinges lined up properly. What I did was assume that when the door was open and the carrier was out at 90° to the back of the Defender the piston would be in the correct position in the slot.

I made a note of where that was, then closed the door and saw which way it went. From there, you can work out which direction you need to adjust the hinges in. For example if it's at the top of the slot when the door is open but at the bottom of the slot when the door is closed then the top hinge needs to go out (left, away from the door) to lift the bolt when the door is closed.

Once you've worked out which way they need to be adjusted, open the door and tighten the piston-nut up nice and tight. Then loosen the sideways adjustment bolts (I think they're the top hinge) and close the door. You might need to loosen the other hinge too. Once you've done that and it's closed happily, tighten it all up again and it should open and close without the piston trying to move up and down.

Duckworth parts, and no that were no instructions but the forsale thread didn't have a link to someone's installation on the paddocks website.

But looking at your picktures the plate that mounts to the door is slightly differed I think. I'll have a look when I got home. Russell

It looks like you may have a half door/pickup version judging by the bracket that attaches the the door in the first picture.
Where as the plate that fits on the door that was supplied with mine is as per the other pictures. Russell

Oh and the rubber cup that you are referring to in your first picture was loose in the box. As it is a flat plate if i wanted to fit it I would have to drill the door I think. Russell
