White smoke and then....
Hi,

Posting this for a friend who 'failed to proceed' coming home from holiday late last night.

He was travelling at 70mph on the motorway in his S plate 300tdi County when large amounts of white smoke started pouring from the exhaust. He tried to make the next service's (1 mile) but failed. Upon pulling over it wouldn't turn over at all. Recovery truck driver suggested piston rings had gone. It has water in the expansion tank. This morning, after sitting all night, it will start up and idle but only rev to 2500rpm. When rev'ed, white smoke emits from the exhaust. Cambelt (complete kit) changed 3000miles ago.

Any ideas folks? Cheers,
Superspoons

Further inspection needed for sure.

Not surprised though if he was doing 70mph, that's no speed for any self-respecting Tdi to be doing Wink

Timing was out, so we have now sorted that and replaced with the later type modified pulley as the old one was shredding the belt. Started up and its a lovely thing... until you accelerate / rev it. The hoses from the intercooler and turbo have collapsed and is causing the 300 to starve hence no go and alot of smoke. New hoses on order (silicone) and then we will get on with the next jobs Thumbs Up Thumbs Up CSK Automotive

They are mate, the top hose is so soft when you accelerate it sucks into nothing. The turbo hose looks ok from the outside but the same thing happens inside. A nice set of silicone should cure it Wink CSK Automotive

wouldn't black smoke be expected if over fueled (or starved of air)?

I have seen it before when fuel related again a 300 but with a pump turned up way too much, constant black smoke when driven but on idle a puff of white smoke CSK Automotive
