Cadac Safari Chef BBQ/Grill?
Anyone use one when camping/caravanning?

Im thinking the Safari might suit me better than the Carri Chef, seeing as its more compact and I will only be cooking for me and missus. I like that the lid can be used as a wok. I intend to use it connected to my gas cylinder with a couple of metres of gas pipe.

Or should I get the larger Carri Chef and paella pan?

I have the big blue one and it is very good.

It's a pain to pack away but it will go back in all it's bags but does take up lots of space!

Yes, I've used one for years and they're great. By coincidence, ours is currently in use in our kitchen as we're part ay through having a new hob fitted Laughing Darren

Sorry but we found the opposite.

Tried it, but too slow, too big, only one cooking area, so still needed another cooker.

But they do sell well, even second hand Thumbs Up

Do you intend to use the gas from the caravan supply or a stand alone bottle?

Which ever way the LPG gas regs state that you can only have maximum of a 1 meter length of flexible hose between bottle and appliance. Oh if your supply is from the caravan be careful I have seen 4 complete caravan burnouts due to gas escape from the coupling in the last 12 months. Don't make old people mad.

GREENI, I was looking at a Cobb today actually. Can it be connected to a propane cylinder or can it only be used with charcoal briquettes?

I would be using it straight from a propane cylinder with a short pipe (didnt realise there was a 1m limit, thanks). I dont want a long pipe trailing from my caravan bbq point.

It's a briquette jobby actually. But you can do full chickens in them and stuff like that.
The missus uses it in the garden now, when the weathers nice. They can get pricey if you buy all the accessories.

I have to admit, I'm allergic to cooking/dishwater and white goods operating.

Bought one on recommendation. Non stick came off. Replacements sent, came off again. Did nothing to cause the problem. They admitted they had issues.

Can you extinguish the briquettes if only cooking for a short time, such as eggs? O r do you have to let them burn out?

Funnily enough was having a Cobb BBQ at a friends on Satiurday and looked like a good camping device ... skimming through the website they do do a gas version as well ...

Thinking for £90 for the stone/briquette version it's worth a try !

I have a Cadac two plate gas stove for camping.
http://www.cadac.uk.com/products/product.php?pid=367

Comes with 2 griddle plates as well as the burner rings - so it is a bit more versatile than the Safari Chef in the OP.
I can cook rice/spuds/pasta/boil kettle on one ring whilst griddling a steak and veggie stir fry on a griddle plate. We got ours from a UK caravan and camping store online last summer but they do seem very rare!

In addition this year I bought a Cobb - see my comments in the camp cooking thread in the Overland and Expedition section. I think I'll probable use it as an oven more than a BBQ, as it is a bit awkward to clean after you've had fat dripping into the moat from sausages and burgers, but it bakes a mean crumble!! Thumbs Up

In the Cobb I've used Aussie Heat Beads with success and kept some of the unburnt ones to use again (immerse in water, then dry out).

In some ways it seems excessive to carry 2 forms of cooker but they do seem complement each other - baking, frying, boiling, griddling... But really the cobb is just a bonus and it couldn't replace the gas stove for general cooking and kettle boiling!

Oh yes, we also have a volcano kettle which is fun to use and boils quicker than the gas stove, especially in cold weather when the gas struggles ... Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I have the Cadac Chef with the "Skottle" There was no quibble with replacement parts, can't fault their customer services.

If it is a gas BBQ with briquettes they are used to spread the heat. When you switch off the gas they cool down.
I have some that have lasted for 6 years. Don't make old people mad.
