Northern Spain/south of France
Hoping the more well travelled than me can shed some light on this part of the world for me. I have just booked the Santander ferry and am planning a trip back home via the tunnel at Calais.

I really don't want to miss anything while I am there and regret not seeing/driving something good!

We are going in the defender but it is more of a family camping trip rather than an all out overland trek, although easy, non wife scaring off road tracks are permitted!

We also have our 2 year old boy with us so don't feel like we should do any wild camping......although I am open to suggestions. Whistle

Due to the boy we need a stop off/campsite quite close to Santander as we dock at around 1730 hrs. Researching this bit is as far as I have got and I am struggling to find anything, even though I am sure there are plenty of Brits looking for accommodation due to the timings of the ferry

We will be staying at my parents house for a week or so in the Charente and have a month at our disposal. I look forward to your ideas and suggestions.

Thanks in advance

James

That area around there the Pyranees meet the sea is quite nice, and some of the mountain roads are excellent.

Last time I was down that way (was a few years ago) we stayedon a campsite in Hossegor

The beach there is mile-after-mile long, and stunningly clean:

And Lourdes is worth a visit

Thanks for that. Lourdes looks like it will make the itinery as we are planning to head back up north via Padirac and Rocamadour (advice taken from the other thread, so thanks for that also Bpman).

We just need to sort out the first section of the journey now...

We did Northern Spain a couple of years ago, plenty of campsites along the coast going west, you must go up to the Picos de Europa, very scenic, we stayed at a site near Colunga which is about an hours drive from the ferry and right on the beach, also stayed at a site in the mountains near the Teleférico de Fuente Dé (cable car) which was very nice with pool and restaurant. There is a campsite just outside Santander and only about 10 mins drive from the ferry, if you follow the coast west from the port. We didn't book anything and always found a plot even in August.

Thanks all. We have enough time to travel west first i guess. I have been to the picos de europa in my dads new (back then) Disco 1 as a child and remember it being impressive so may have to revisit it.

Anybody been to the observatory at the picos du midi de bigorre? I wouldn't mind having a drive up there
