Oops...can't manage to download pictures, but following the advice I got from you guys, I decided to go for the "nuclear option" as far as lighting was concerned. The main problems I had was that the SVX grill made it difficult to fit an A bar together any decent driving lamps as there was the potential for the lights to rub against the grill (mine is the air con version which sticks out more). I couldn't put anything decent on the roof, either, because I only had about 20mm clearance in the office car park.

The "make-do" solution was to go with JW Speaker replacement headlights and a Rigid Industries E Series 40 inch light bar on the roof. I was not expecting much....but the result was way beyond my expectations.

The J W Speaker 8000 Evo LED lights

I know there are lots of posts on this forum in which people rave about the Speaker lights, but I have to say that the difference between the SVX standard lights (which are better than the normal LR lights) and the Speaker LED lights is simply astonishing. Everything is lit up by a crisp white light and the response time is instantaneous. The look of the units is stylish and whilst they are not cheap, you pay for what you get. I ordered these from Tim at Mobilecentre, after a long chat in which he pointed me away from very expensive and silly combinations to a simple solution. He was incredibly knowledgable and was a real gentleman...if you have any doubts, I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Are there any downsides to the lights? The only one I can see (and this is really nit-picking) is that they have a very sharp cutoff at the edge of the light pattern. However, even this quirk is massively compensated by the fact that the light thrown out is enormous. If there is anyone out there who is thinking about making the plunge but is slightly wary, all I can say is "do it"! Ring up Tim and get some genuine advice about a great product.

After doing some research on this forum I tentatively rang up Mike at MGS, up in Glasgow, and he told me all about the light bars he had. He went to great pains to explain that there are a lot of copies of the RI bars out there and most come from China. They all cost far less than the RI bars but then you only need to see the real thing to understand why they are so cheap. I took what Mike said with a pinch of salt but that was my first mistake...he was absolutely correct; the RI bars are bomb-proof and the light from them is simply astounding. I have watched all of the Youtube videos and whilst they do show how dramatic the light thrown is, they simply do not do the bars justice. What they fail to show you is the pure quality of the light bar, as the finished product is completely sealed and looks fantastic. Depending on exchange rates and delivery options, the bar takes about ten days to come over from the States and arrives in a long box....unwrap this and you soon understand where the money goes...again (like the J W Speakers) you get what you pay for. Again, speak to Mike and get some genuine advice...thanks Mike, a great product

Rigid Industries 40 inch light output is 16800 raw lumens

Lazer Lamp T16 (UK made) is 13888 raw lumens and 88% efficient, but is only 27 inch long!

So the Lazer lamp gives out 83% of the RI light output on a bar 2/3 the size of the RI light bar!

Must admit I am looking forward to some new lights which are due to come out shortly

However the Rigid is the more efficient bar if you look at electrical power in versus light out which in my opinion would be what efficiency is classed as when used as a general term.

Lazer is 13888 raw lumens @ 190W so 73.1 lumens / w
Rigid is 16800 raw lumens @ 160W so 105 lumens / w

The Defender 2 forum is a gold mine of information but as has been asked before apples versus apples comparisons must be made when stating "facts" on forums. Lazer state they are optically 88% efficient which is pretty much standard however the optical word is not mentioned which leeds (

) to the impression that the total efficiency of the bar is 88% where it is not - you still have thermal and assembly losses to factor in. I am happy to state that x or y is more efficient or brighter etc if somebody provides the figures

Headline numbers are great and we all use them me included such as we do a lamp 20 inches long that is 40,000 lumens @ 240W (166.7 lumens / w) ......but it is 7 inches high so not really classed as a bar

Mobile Centre has no commercial interest in Rigid or Lazer and as such do not compete in the bar market at all, my only interest is to ensure products are represented correctly in order for the consumer to make the best choice which I know is something both myself and Brendan along with most other site sponsors try to do almost every day on here.

I have no axe to grind with Brendan far from opposite as we have supplied him with a number of his products and are always on the end of the phone when he calls for information on wiring, Blue Sea products etc and I am more than happy to say value his custom as we do all our customers.

My Rigid Industries e-Series 40" light bar worked a treat in the arctic ... just like day time, the bar has 4x 10 inch sections, 10 inches either side are a wide beam pattern and the middle 20 inches are spot light/narrow beam

Depending on the width of the light you want to run - not hard to make a custom bumper to make it fit 'in' the bumper offering a more OE look and further protection for the lamp.
