I check the A frame ball joint and there was only slight play. The noise to me sounds more central G/box Transfer case area? Any thoughts? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Two thoughts - I had a double carden failure that went quckly from a trittering/squeeking noise - caused the front prop to lock against the gearbox. Secondly - take a look at my post about the big nut coming loose on the transfer box to front prop flange - u/js fine but the flange can be moved by hand side to side - just tighten the nut - vibration at pretty much all speeds

Big nut on the front T/C output OK.
With prop removed clunk still there. Onto the rear and found this. Does this look knackered to you ? A new to be ordered me thinks. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Lucky you found it in time..... I had one come apart on my old lightweight (although that might have had something to do with the V8 under the bonnet and my size 11's

To be honest whilst it is out you may as well replace the other end as well, it's already had 18months abuse and they aren't a fortune to change. Personally I would do it for peace of mind.

I've ordered two new UJs from DefenderBits so will do both for piece of mind. Just hope the internal part of the UJ isn't damaged 1999 Defender TD5 110

New prop UJs arrived today, So far not had much joy extracting the old UJs, Removed the cir-clips one on bit of the UJ the other cir-clips have broken off and left bits behind. Maybe I need a hydraulic press....
Tried the socket method to extract the UJ but despite swinging on the vice they ain't moved!! 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
