Hi guys

Its good to see quiet a few members on here that have posted in your signature line about been members of the UK's response teams.
I think its a great network and run by some very good teams......just wish we could find more members willing to use there 4x4's to help build a bigger network.

Anyone have any views on this etc ? www.4x4lrs.com

Just been looking at the "Devon 4x4 Response" website

Would look like a good, worthwhile group to join - and make good use of the vehicle!!

I see some of you are members of your local group through your signature line.......

What type of things have you been called out for? 2003 90 XS SW

Tried to Join when we had the bad weather to offer assistance but was told that i would have to have a number of interviews before being accepted ....current state of affairs i guess but to cut a long story short, i havent got time to discuss with some random if im a nutbag or a sexual deviant ,so just chucked the recovery gear in the back of the motor and went out on my own.

Would love to help though so if theres a process, maybe a full explanation of whats required would be good. You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things

As you can see, I'm with Northants response team.

What you'll be doing is dependent on your local setup but we are part of the local council's emergency procedures and work a lot with the local Primary Care Trusts as well.

Typical things for me this year have been taking nurses or care workers on their district rounds; helping meals on wheels get to the vulnerable and that sort of thing. Essentially a 'go anywhere' chauffeur.

Other members have been called out on recovery operations but those are less common for the council/police to call in.

Very worthwhile stuff although you have to commit some time to it (typically I'll be on call for half a day at a time). Ours is pretty smoothly run and I nominate by automated text response whether I'm available or not. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Normally. As a club, we claim against the miles I've driven but personally I donate it to the club for future equipment (high vis jackets, radios...).

Most people will accept their mileage expenses. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I'm now a fully paid up member of the "Devon and Cornwall 4x4 Response" - Quite a big area, but its the same area as the Devon and Cornwall Police - who basically initiate the callout to the group. In fact there are several sub-groups so I've tagged along to the Plymouth group.

We should get a fair bit of "training" together out and about ready for when we are needed - Or is that just an excuse for some Greenlaneing!!

I've set up a webshop - www.buy.at/dc4x4 - to help raise some funds for the club - I've done the same with other charities I've been involved with, and its worked very well - So if your buying stuff on-line, from eBay to M&S check out the links on our site and you will be doing a little to help us!!

Regards
Jools

ps - first training session on Sunday - on foot - I'll let you know how we get on!! 2003 90 XS SW

Sorry Guys will probably get shot down in Flames for this but I’m a firm no

My Reasons are Simple I’m of a firm opinion that we should not cover for the ES they need the correct equipment by helping you mask this. TVP used to have Defenders & FFRR’s not seen any for years

Yes without question if I come across a situation when I’m out that I can assist with I’ll offer, normally the ES / HA won’t let you but that’s their choice but then they don’t know me I could go in and make things worse.

As for pulling people out of ditches well they can stay there 99% of the time I’m a 4x4 driving Tosser that pollutes the world as long as theres no injury I’ll move on.

Last few winters may change their opinion (try buying a Late Low Mileage 4x4 its harder than normal)

That said if you want to help then do so its your life your choice so good on you Thumbs Up

OH I spent enough time this year pulling our own cars off Drives and Ditches Rolling with laughter

Each to their own.

[personal view]

We should stop relying on someone else (state included) to do everything for us.

We're getting to the stage where nobody is prepared to help anybody else - mostly because they feel it is somebody else's job.

If you want the ES to have all the right equipment, the council to have enough preparation for every eventuality and even the health service to be able to cope in every situation then you should go and live i the Nordics and pay 70% tax.

I'd much rather live in a world where those that can, help - not because they have to or are obliged to but because they want to.

Alan cant disagree with anything you said

Apart from "We're getting to the stage where nobody is prepared to help anybody else - mostly because they feel it is somebody else's job." is this just not the fact that people are scared of being Sued when it goes wrong

Oh I pay 50% tax so only another 20% to go Thumbs Up

Do the response have there own insurance for the vehicles?

I see it a bit in the same light as the coastguard and the RNLI - "Volunteer" - Lifeboats

The coastguard have the responsibility to protect life at sea - but they call out the volunteer lifeboat service when there is an incident to assist them.

In an ideal world the Lifeboats would be government funded.

I don't think anyone would argue that the RNLI do an excellent job!!

One of the reasons why I joined was I wanted to find a group of 4x4 enthusiasts locally - and if we can do a bit of "good" at the same time - even better!

Cheers
