Hi all ....... Just bought a Lemon
Just like to say Hi and introduce my self
My names Glenn I've been in and around Land Rovers for over 30 years from series 1 through to Defenders.
Thinking its time I bought back into Land Rover ownership, I spot a real nice looking 300tdi on the bay of E so I take a punt and win it for 5K . Off I travel the hundred and so miles to meet the guy who's selling and pick the truck up, after a quick look over the Landy I hand over the cash and set off home all's fine the car looks good drives great.
I should of known really not to buy a car with a short mot, especially a Land Rover but the car looked good and the guy I bought it from seemed a nice genuine guy . Anyway the day after I get the car home I put it in for the mot Shocked The rear chassis is toast all nicely covered up in black gunk and filler .
To be honest it didn't look like a new repair but I'm now left wondering why the guy selling didn't mot the car Crying or Very sad
Anyway it appears there's not much I can do about it I've just bought a project Landy for 5k Big Cry
I'm gutted thought I new enough not to get stung

Now the dilemma
Do I dig the welder out and plate the rear while I save for a galv chassis and start a nice chassis welding thread on here
or do I just move the Landy on as a project and probably lose 2.5k in the process

Sorry about the moaning first post, I'm just angry with myself the tell tale signs were there and I ignored them I just feel totally shafted Sad

it happens to everyone sooner or later.

a new galv chassis is what £1.2k? so for £6.5k with £300 for odd bits you have a top condition def thats worth a fair bit now its on a galv chassis.

if you buy a project one for less it will need alot more doing.

could you not do a rear 1/4 or half? Cheers

A similar thing happened to me (I wonder how many others can start a story like that Rolling Eyes ), except mine was already on a galvanised chassis but had been fitted with a rotten bulkhead, dodgy electrics etc.

As these projects inevitably do, one thing lead to another and I ended up spending far in excess of what the vehicle was ever going to be worth

This is actually a simple decision in my opinion:

Keep it, patch it, use it for as long as you can, flog it for circa £2.5k (lose £2.5k) but had 3? years use

Sell it, lose £2.5k, have no use

Keep it, spend (and spend) on it .... The conclusion is up to you, sell early lose loads, keep for ever and never lose Whistle Mr. Green

Good luck Thumbs Up

Unlucky, any Defender is a project even a new one! But in a stupid sort of way that is what makes me like them so much.

Surprised You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

Like you say galv chassis is the way to go if I decide to keep it. I don't think its worth the effort of a half chassis may as well go the whole hog.
The rest of it is fine the bulkheads good the engine and box are both good just a tad pee,d off I didn't expect to have the welder out so soon Rolling Eyes
I don't think the guy I bought it from did the covering up, I think this was done before he owned it . He bought it from a so called reputable 4x4 refurbishment specialist just on 12mths ago, how could they of missed this ? and looking at the way they plated the rear cross member I'm beginning to wonder if they actually did it

Doesn't matter now its mine and I've got to make a decision what I'm going to do with it.

never hurts to ask the vendor to put 12mths mot on a vehicle prior to buying, if they shun at it then you know there will be probs.

1/4 chassis you can do in a good day with 2 people.

my first re-chassis, took me 10 days, 8am-4pm, with 2 of us (me and Walfy) on it for the first 5 days to do mine.

we had one later day dropping the cage and wing bars back on.

that was a 200tdi, manu with cage changed to a 2.8 Auto, td5 bulkhead, chassis and then refit cage etc.

wiring in the td5 instr took 2 days of that (i am not soo good with electrics!)

so either was, cash aside, its not massive project. Cheers

Look at it this way...I spent £1k on a (drivable) project 110. By the time I'm done I reckon it'll be into me for £6.5k including a re-spray. Ok you weren't after a project, but as others have pointed out, all Defenders are projects - it's just the scale that varies Smile As you're experienced with Landies, as re-chassis won't take you long, or even a weekend and an aftermarket 1/4 chassis could see you through for a few years!

But you don't expect to pay 5k for a car that's basically a rot box if Ide spent 1k like you or even 3k then I may of expected to do a bit of welding

But on a car that was described as excellent and told verbally it would need nothing for the MOT, solid all round, I didn't expect this . I've bought £500 series projects that need less welding

I know all Defenders are projects in one way or another but I didn't buy a project I bought a so called excellent 90 that's basically an unroadworthy piece of scrap . If Ide of paid what it's worth 2.5 - 3k then fair enough . But theres no getting away from the feeling I've been shafted .i feel like the guys just took my money and washed his hands of it . Just because its a Defender doesn't make it right .

Easy way out would be some scrote comes along and steals the heap of Censored

If it was described as 'excellent' in the ad, then you have a legal right to return it and get your money back.

Not going to go down the eBay resolution process .The seller was a genuine enough guy .Im going to take some pictures and see if he's willing to maybe pay for the parts and I'll do the welding probably get away with a crossmember and extensions and some 2mm mild steel, reel of wire, and a bottle of gas won't cost more than £200

Think I've calmed down a bit now, couldn't see the wood for the trees earlier. Just wasn't what I was expecting

Welcome back to Land Rovers Very Happy

A sensible way forward if it works , much better to resolve the problem than end up fighting even though you are in the right.
Good luck and I hope the seller is reasonable and plays ball .

Okay, interesting thread given I sold this Land Rover .

I had the defender for circa a year with no trouble or indications of any issues. I bought the defender from a reputable land rover dealer and only had a good experience with the car and as such was as surprised as Rusty Spanner that there was an issue with the chassis. When I was informed of this I did phone RS and offered to send a picture (if supplied) to the place where I purchased it to see if they would be interested in considering the situation.

I am sadended by the outcome here but I sold the car without being an expert and describing it to the best of my ability with my knowledge land rovers and expereince of the car in question.

I am not a trader, I only sold the 90 to move onto a 110 and until I heared Rusty Spanners situation beliefed the 90 was a great vehicle.

Anyhow, just thought I would share this. When I last spoke to RS he was going to weld the problem area in the rear quarter area which I understood was the only problem. Sweatysock
