Soundproofing and carpet! Advice needed on what to do...
Had my new defender for a week now and it's very noisy. (i know,, it's a defender)

Model is 2014 7 seater, but with nothing inside, just bare metal and a cheap rubber mat. This will change based on your assistance.

I want to fit carpets and possibly a bit of soundproofing. Does anyone have any practical advice on the best soundproofing that also fits under a carpet set or do any of the carpet sets have a decent soundproofing effect?

The dynamite stuff seems thin so may work, but i like the cost of the Mud stuff. Stinger. If needed.

Lastly there seem to be 2 carpet sets available. Exmore premium or LRI. Both seem ok. if a bit pricy, but do they have any overage to cope with soundproofing? Is there a better alternative?

Cheers
Paul

I bought Dynamat kit and carpet pre cut from LRi. Only so far done the rear of my 90 and it has made a HUGE difference.

If I did it again I would just buy plain sheets and as the kit doesnt fit perfectly, but its 99%

Sheets of Dynamat or carpet?

Also read a lot about having marine carpet or van lining stuff.
Do the exmore/LRI ones start to smell when wet and soggy?

I have had my TDCi 90 front, back, roof and all three doors done in dynamat also I have the Mud side panels in the rear you can just see them in the picture below ,Genuine Land Rover rubber mat again in the front and rear all so a carpet in the back over the matting ,this all seem to make the 90 a nice place to be ,I can listen to the Radio at 70 mph ,but it's at slower speeds you really get the full benefit no noise from the rear wheel box's etc ,even the doors shut with a more solid feel, over all definitely worth doing.

Get the Exmoor carpet, i wasnt impressed with the LRI quality or fit. The floor mats where too large and fell to bits after 3 months (replaced with new) that then fell apart after 6 months. Back then my 110 did about 4k a year so terrible quality imo.

The seatbox fit however is quite tight and rather good. Instagram @defender_ventures

I've used Silent Coat in mine. Great stuff and cheaper than Dynamat. A hot air gun was very handy when fitting.

As for soundproofing, if you have a compressor I would suggest Lizardskin. Used it on my 110 doors, bonnet and underside of the floor pans, makes a huge difference fraction of the cost of Dynamat (excluding the conpressor etc), more effective, easier to apply - but more prep required and greater coverage.

If LizardSkin had be around when I did my interior (Fatmat Megamat) I would have used it instead. If I ever get round to it Ill be doing the roof and bulkhead. Instagram @defender_ventures

Thanks for the Carpet info and verdicts on soundproofing.

I was contemplating buying and making my own with marine grade fabric/carpet, but in reality I doubt i’d Have the time or patience and the results would be ok, but not professional.
Same with the Dynanat, it’s expensive and probably no better than all others, but it’s cut to size so easy to fit bit by bit in no time.

Anyone have dynanat under an exmore carpet set! Is there enough overlength to join the corners?

Take a look at Silent Coat as an alternative to Dynamat. As far as I can tell, it's the same material but is slightly cheaper. I used it in my old 90 and my current 110, along with 6mm closed cell foam, and it's made a huge improvement.

I trimmed the 90 with Veltrim, which is a stretchy material that's glued in place. I plan to use auto carpet in my 110, secured with carpet tape, when I get chance to finish it. Darren

Dynamat on the sides of the tub, then silent coat on the roof, plus the rear of mine has rubber Checker plate... and it’s deadened any resonance.

Remember to do the rear quarters at;und the windows too, and the rear door, as well as back of the door cards.
