Battery advice for electric tandem please
I need some advice about how to power a 36 volt electric (pedelec) touring tandem bicycle.

It will have a "standard" brushless hub motor but it seems a bit silly spending a "standard" £300+ for just a 10 Ah lithium battery (which won't power it very long).

As we usually tour with a trailer (long vehicle), there is the possibility to use a bigger battery(s). Normal car batteries won't work, as running them down will kill them. I don't know how deep/often marine batteries can be run down before they die. I guess I would need 3 x 12 volt?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Hi matt
I have 4 pedelecs from low power to 1200 w .
I would suggest you stick to the hub manufactures spec.
Have a look at pedelecs uk loads of battery info

Thanks Smile

Hub dealer just says 36 volts - lithium, NiCd, Lead acid etc. are fine.
Lithium is great in some ways but ridiculously expensive for a decent (e.g. 20-30 Ah) capacity. As we can use a decent-sized trailer to put batteries in, I was wondering if any e.g. "boat-people" could suggest alternatives.

I'll look at Pedelecs UK now Thumbs Up

Cheers
Matt

p.s. just dismantled the eccentric bottom bracket bearing and it was just loose, not worn out - phew. Hard to get for a 40 year old tandem Shocked Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
