2.2TDCi Smoothness (or not!)
Just wondering if anyone has encountered the same problem as me with the 2.2 engine.

I know Defenders aren't the smoothest of vehicles to drive at times, but my 2.2 is particularly jerky at low speeds. It has been back at the dealers 4 times now and each time I am told it is normal Big Cry

I have had numerous defenders in the past without this problem and even the courtesy car defender 2.2 they gave me was like night and day, its clutch was even a lot lighter than mine for some reason, but despite this I am told it is normal. My car has done about 22,000 miles now so should have settled down by now.

Example of when the problem occurs is in queuing traffic, or going over speed bumps when you are slowing down and accelerating away. It develops a mild case of kangaroo diesel and is not smooth at all. I end up having to ride the clutch to keep it smooth which is not good. Land Rovers always used to be so flexible at low revs.

Any thoughts on what I can ask the dealer to check next. Confused

Cheers

just a shot in the dark here. do you keep the revs very low or do you tend to rev the engine quite high?

actually not sure why I just asked that cos I think the egr is supposed to be closed at low revs....../
anyway I inclined to suggest you look at the MAP sensor and see if its clogged up with soot as mine was - if so you could trying giving it a clean with carb cleaner or similar. kangarooing was one of symptoms I've had.

Perhaps try another dealer, one that does not try and fob you off with the old "but they are all like that" line. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.

I'm told that's why it's best to remap the 2.2 , it removes this issue ?
My13 does the same on occasions.

Spoke to the dealer again today and it appears to be a common issue with the 2.2 which LR do not have a fix for. It's not officially acknowledged by LR but they have had a number of cars in with the same complaint. He said in his opinion it does need a remap.

Apparently they had the same issues with the 90 2.2 which they issued a fix for which is why the courtesy car was so much better. It is only the 110 they need to fix.

Mine is due a service in a few thousand miles so finger crossed LR provide some update in the near future for it.

Thanks for that DMAKX, I have a 90 2.2 (my first LR) which has the kangarooing problem so hopefully they'll be able to fix it then. Before I took delivery of the Defender I thought it'd be really good at low speeds in traffic etc but in reality it's not as good as my previous car (Suzuki Jimny) which was really smooth just tick tocking along with both feet off the pedals. On the plus side the Defender is better than expected on the motorway at 60. I'm not one for going back to the dealers as soon as a fault appears but the list of issues is starting to grow now so I'll be going back soon.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Yes Land Rover do have a fix for it, they are downloading the MY13 engine managment software into older vehcles at service much improved, mine is loads better. Mine was done for dpf faults. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I can confirm mine does the same, but not all the time.

Never noticed it on the test drive, which did include slow speed driving, but it's there now. Not all the time, but does happen.

I've a few things on the list to be looked at on the first service. Fortunately, nothing major.

The software download mentioned isn't automatically put on your vehicle unless you have a specific complaint which will it will cure. Low speed jerkiness and rough/poor high rev gear changes are two of the faults it cures.

It also cures a DPF fault, so call your dealer say you are having rough gear changes and they should put the software upgrade on.

I've had mine done, and it's like a different vehicle!

Get it done!

Mine also does it, MY13 90 but I've learnt the only way around is just a tad more slip on the clutch

Remap might be next course.... Hmmmm, thats not mud....

PS it's applicable to some 13MY also.

You'll find details of the software patch on Topix, and it shows the chassis number range which it's useful for.

Topix is the Jaguar Land Rover vehicle resource website. It shows vehicle build data, recommended fixes, recall info, instructions for fitment of parts accessories etc.

topix.landrover.jlrext.com/

Hope this helps? Currently....... all gone...... pending delivery of a mid life crisis.......
