TD5 diagnostic check
I think my 110 td5 has a drink issue, (not as many miles to a full tank as normal) so decided to ring the local dealer to see how much it costs to plug in the computer to check the ECU/Sensors etc
I told the guy the model was a 110 Td5 and then he asked me is it a Discovery!!!

£105 for the hour!!!! Eeek, I wasn't expecting that! All I wanted was to get it plugged in and checked and see if there are any firmware/ ECU updates missing

Anyone in the North West (Chester area) with the correct diagnostic kit? 1999 Defender TD5 110

If your ever closer to the Midlands (Junc 9 M42) I can do it for you Wink - and for a lot less (but you will spend more in fuel).

If it's 1999 Td5 - there will no software updates, as your ECU is a none flash version. To get the later software you would technically need a later ECU (either the latest spec MSB none flash or a flash ECU with the correct files).

However, you can do a full diagnostic check and look at all the sensors and live data.

Cheers Ian, A little far out for me unless I am passing by.

After the car has been remapped, would the ECU become flashable/updatable ?

There is a tuner (which I have been to before for a diag check) 20mins down the road from me and have emailed him but no reply just yet. 1999 Defender TD5 110

No... if the ECU has been remapped - but is still a MSB***** (none flash) then it always stays the same, unless someone has tried to run a later calibration on the ECU (which can be done in some instances).

The only reflashable ECU's are NNN******* if one of these has been fitted, then the files could be changed - but LR never released than many updates for a flash ECU on a early EU2 Defender.

Ian. Are you around IRB central most days now then? Have a feeling when I visited your workshop you were still part time. Could be wrong... Rolling Eyes

Eeek!

My local specialist (but not main dealer) plugs my TD5 in for free to reel of any problems. Normally there's nothing, but if there is something (like last time when the MAF sensor wasn't working) he gets the work because he's a reasonable guy. The free diagnostics is like a prelude to the (usually reasonable) fix if necessary. A bit more foresight applied there I think!

Andy.

My local VW dealer charged £75 +vat for diagnostic investigation, and then wanted £700 to replace 2 lamba sensors, which under questioning were the source of the fault, but were in effect doing there job, and had tripped the EML as the car had miss fired. So in effect it was £75 +vat just to reset the light !! Been fine ever since, and another plus for using your INDY. Thumbs Up

The service manager was quite insistent on giving the car a check over before plugging in the computer. 1999 Defender TD5 110
