Easiest way is to have it checked.
Most garages (I always use Just Tyres) do a free check and only charge if adjustment is required. In 14-years of owning my current 90 I have had it checked regularly but only had to have it adjusted three times and that was after maintencnce had been carried out (TRE replacement etc). As you have surmised, pulling to the left could just be the camber of the road however it could also be tyre pressures. In my experience, incorrect tracking shows itself by corrections being required to the steering wheel. In normal driving my wheel sits dead straight with no movement required but when the tracking is out I find I am having to make constant (minor) adjustments. Some people say all LR's are like that anyway but that is just rubbish and shows a lack of maintenance, with correctly set up steering and components that aren't worn the steering can feel as tight and precise as almost any vehicle. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Tyre wear is the normal thing to keep a eye out, most defender steering wheels arent dead straight so dont worry about that. Also if it only does it now and again then it can be the road surface, most commonly pulling to the left but can also pull to the right on the right bit of road.
Best thing is to pop to your local garage and ask them to check it for you, you dont need any of these fancy 4 wheel tracking jobs as there is only one thing you can adjust on a defender, the toe in or out. Normally a garage will have a chart which will tell them the correct settings for what vehicle they are adjusting, sometime it will give a set figure or sometimes 2 settings that it should be between, if it is the latter then ask them to adjust it to the setting which is closest to zero, i find on a defender this makes it wonder less and gives best tyre wear. Pete. |

would someone mind explaining how to go about changing the toe in /out?
the garage I went to suggested the wheels would be the same ie any adjustments would apply to both ie an adjustment of 2 would adjust both by 1 if that makes sense? many thanks. |
